OP, I do not have a GMC so was lurking.

Thank You for an enjoyable read. Yes, I did read every word of every post. Several twice.

No feathers to ruffle. This is the first thing since 2006 when I retired that had me missing my Middle school classroom!

I have been unable to figure out what the "1" at the far right indicates. Nothing seems to change it.

Does anyone know?
1 is the lowest possible gear if you toggle the shifter down you can actually get 11 and Iíll never shift out of first you can put it in 1-2 1-3 etc. and the transmission will not shift past the highest gear listed and it will downshift all the way to the lowest gear listed if you downshift it all the way you can lock it in first gear so it would say 1-1 hope this helps

Gear indicator

D is for drive in standard mode. M if for manual shift, so in this position you change the gears up and down. 1 is strictly first gear. When I'm towing in the hills I use manual mode I'm never happy with factory shift points

Manual shift

Like all the other comments, it's your manual gear. I've used it towing my RV when I would hit a steep grade. Found it helpful to us.
