2017 F350 SRW different tow ratings

I am looking to upgrade to a 5th wheel toy hauler. I really don't want a DRW vehicle as I want to drive this vehicle when I'm not towing and don't want the size difference.

When I look at the Ford towing guides, I see a single rear wheel F350 max fifth wheel can range from 12,200 all the way up to 20,000. I see that even within a specific gear. So, I've been looking for a truck with the max tow rating and just can't find one. What is the difference in these trucks to get a 7,800 pound weight difference. How can you find that max vehicle? I see the same issue with an F250.

The additional parameters that determine the actual tow rating are 2WD/4WD, cab, gear ratio, and engine. The maximum 5th wheel towing for an F350 SRW is achieved with 2WD, regular or club cab, 3.31 or 3.55 axle, and 6.7L diesel.

I think you find the lower tow ratings on a gas and also find you can't get 11,500 GVWR on gas engine. The higher tow ratings are on diesel low option trucks. The problem still is most 5er toyhaulers have pin of 22% or higher at even 16000 pounds you need a payload of 3520 plus the weight of people and stuff in the truck plus hitch. The way the manufactures get away with those ratings is they use goose neck that has a 15% pin weight so that same 16,000 would yield a 2400 pound pin weight. Even at 20,000 a 15% pin weight yields a pin weight of 3000 where a 22% would give you 4400 plus the the people and stuff plus hitch weight.

I am attaching the tow guide. Look at the 4x4 long bed. With the different weight ratings in the last column. I get the difference in the gooseneck vs fiver. I am looking at a toyhauler with a max gvwr just under 18,000.

So you get one with 18,000 pound tow rating and you need a payload between 3960 (22%) and 4500 (25%) plus another 500 pounds for people and stuff plus hitch weight. Payload needs to be 4460 to 5000 lbs on the yellow sticker on the door jam not on some web page with zero option 2 wheel drive truck. Towing capacity is only one part of the total package and you will exceed you payload long before you exceed you towing capacity. They are rated towing capacity using a 15% pin weight and that not going to happen on toyhauler in the real world.

Edit -- here is what tow planner says about 4,000 payload and I doubt seriously you find a 2017 F350 Diesel on the lot over 3600 pound payload using the yellow payload sticker on the door jam for that truck.

Fwiw... I had the same concern before I made the switch from a short bed f250 to a f350 DRW 2 years ago. It hasn't been that big of a deal honestly. I park in the same spots.

To add on to my above post you not only have to worry about exceeding the payload you have to worry about exceeding the following.

1. Combine weight ratings - Truck and 5er weight together.
2. Somewhere in the 4000 pound range you going to exceed Axle Weight Ratings.
3. Not only the Axles but all so the tire weight ratings.
4. If you toyhauler 18,000 pounds and truck 8200 pounds exceeds 26,001 you could be required to get different non commercial class drivers license.
5. Some states even require endorsements to you driver license lower than 26,001.

What do SRW & DRW mean within the context of this thread?

In CA >= 10,000 lbs bumper pull or 15,000 ibs 5th wheel requires a non-commercial Class A license.

I just upgrade from a F150 Crew Eco boost (towed for 6 years) to a F350 crew DRW not 4x4 with all the updates for towing capacity and comfort. I still park in the same parking spots.. Main difference is getting into underground parking.. I don't even try now.

Love the DRW for towing and I drive to an office job every day and it is my commuter vehicle.. gas consumption and cost overall is not much different than the EcoBoost

In ontario, you can use your standard "G" licenses as long as the vehicle is non-commercial and does not have air brakes. So all trailers are fine and most Gas Class "A"s and class "C"s

I know when i bought my 2011 Ford 6.7 F350 I had to get the 18" wheels option vs the standard 17" for more payload.

Towing Calculator based on Truck's Payload/CCC - Towing Planner
You might be able to get there on a 2wd low optioned truck. I have a '17 350 CCSB Lariat diesel, 4wd, well optioned, and the CCC is 3477#.

Here in FL, RV's are exempt from CDL requirements.

2017 F350 Towing

I have a 2017 F350 SRW diesel 4X4 long bed with 3.55 axle ratio. I pull a 2018 42' Sandpiper 383LBLOK and can't even tell it's there. I also routinely pull a 24' gooseneck cattle trailer (loaded about 18K) and a 33' tandem axle double rear wheel gooseneck flatbed trailer (loaded with equipment/hay about 25K). No problems. Plenty of power. I have had two Dodge dually's (2007 6.7l and 2015 6.7l) and they were fine but found the dually was just an unnecessary pain around town. Just get the 2017 F350 in the long bed and the diesel and you will be fine and a lot happier around town.

If you are going to tow an 18K toy hauler, I think you would be very surprised at the performance and comfort difference that an F350 dually would provide. I use my dually as a daily driver and once you get used to it, no different than any other truck for parking and maneuvering (well, just a bit but no big thing).

I would reconsider the options.
