2020 Ford F250 6.2 vs 7.3 Gas

Hey all,

Just thinking about modernizing our TV...

With the advent of the 7.3 gas, seriously considering going that direction. EPA has nearly ruined diesels, but the 6.7 is not out of the question yet.

Really just looking for experience with the 6.2 and the 7.3 if there are any out there. I already know that the 6.7 diesel is the holy grail, along with the EPA mandated problem areas.

We have a '19 6.2 and love it. We pull a ~9,000-pound 2902WS and it gets us where we're going with no complaints. Would a diesel get us there a bit quicker? Maybe. But to me it's not worth the $10K premium and all of the extra maintenance. If I was to buy a 2020 I'd probably spring for the 7.3 but I had zero regrets not waiting for the 7.3 when I bought the '19. I knew the 7.3 was coming out but it really didn't make that much difference to me.

If anyone on this forum has a new 7.3 F250 with the 10 speed transmission I am curious on the towing benefits both in power and fuel mileage. I would expect the performance and milage to be an improvement over the 6.2 6spd. Only due to the better RPM power curve use between gears

woo10-210,

Have you had the 6.2 in any hills/mountains with your rig? I'm thinking of mountains/hills like Tenessee Smoky Mountains, etc. Not too concerned about the Rockies, ie. Big Mountains.

I just made my 2nd payment on my 2020 F-250 with the 6.2 it also has 3.73 rear end (upgrade from 2012 3.5 EcoBoost. So far I really enjoy pulling out Curise Lite. But I figure I'm pulling a little under 6k. MPG anywhere from 8 - 10.

Yes I have been through Tennessee Kentucky and California San Francisco area also through the white sands north of Las Cruces which has a steady climb fir several miles. My 6.2 pulls our 40 foot 5er with no issues although I may get down into 2nd at the crest I still maintain about 50mph
However would like to trade our 2011 F250 in for a newer truck

Do you know what rear axle you have? Is your transmission the same 6 speed auto that is available today?

When I was shopping for a TV I test drove the 6.2 and didn’t like the way it revved. It seemed to rev like hell and didn’t pull. I was used to the low end torque of the eco boost. I wish the 7.3 would have been around to try at the time.

New tow

We upgraded our TV. I was fully expecting to get a 2020 f250 with the 7.3 gas. There were few vehicles anywhere in New England that had the towing specs I wanted. So the option would have been order the new truck. Due to production of vents, Ford wouldn’t have started making trucks fir a while and according to the Ford Forum, it would have been a 4 month wait. That wasn’t really a problem. However, we decided to look for a 2019 6.7 diesel and there were few f250s with the specs I wanted. However, when I opened the search to F350 6.7 long bed we had several trucks to choose from. VERY VERY happy with that decision. We were all le to get $5,000 in rebates on the 2019 vs $500 in rebate for ordering a 2020. I now have no towing concerns ANYWHERE. SURPRISED on MPG. 20-21 without trailer. 12 mpg with 9,000 lb trailer and a fully loaded cargo long bed.

I have about 1000 miles towing a 9k TT with my 2020 F-350 7.3 10 speed 3.73 . Some hills, no mountains yet. I traded my 2018 6.7 diesel F-250 on this one for the very reasons somebody listed, concern of emissions failures/expenses/cost of ownership. Very pleased with my decision. 6.7 was a beast. but expensive to own. If money is no concern, get the 6.7 diesel/10 speed, towing just about anything, anywhere, is effortless. My 7.3 tows wonderfully, lots of torque at low RPM's. 8-10 MPG towing. When pulling uphill, I have experienced 9-8 downshifts, engine never exceeding 3500 RPM (no typical screaming gas RPM's) while easily maintaining 65 MPH. I have over 40 years of towing experience, this 7.3 10 speed combo is the best I have ever experienced, taking all aspects of ownership into consideration. Power cannot be compared to the 6.7 diesel, the 7.3 has about 1/2 the torque. With that said, my gas 7.3/10 speed has proven to be more than adequate, she is a keeper.

4.30, 6.2 gas

I own a 2016 F-250 LB. I pull 11,000lb trailer. I average 8-10 mpg towing.
I’ve never been through the Rockies but the hills in Pennsylvania and Tennessee.
Slows a little when getting to the top, but no issues. The high torque is around 4,200 RPM, red line is around 6,000 RPM. Sometimes the gas engine screams a little. I know before Ford released this engine they ran it for 500 hours @6,000 RPM in one of their tests. I was going to order a 2020 F-350, 7.3 gas. The truck bed was about 3” higher than my 2016. I stopped looking because my current set up is almost perfectly level when towing. I didn’t want to deal with nose high with the new truck.

Fishtexx- but expensive to own.

Why do you think they are expensive to own?

That's what I'm concerned about too, with the 6.2.

Yeah, I know that the engine is designed to run that way... but that doesn't mean I have to like it... unless I get one.

The 7.3 was designed for towing and with the 10 sp trans I think it's the ideal gas set-up with the right gear ratio.

I know this is about the 7.3 but some of the comments on the 6.7 have me wondering. My 6.7 is almost 4 years old and works flawlessly. Emissions are all doing what they were designed to do. Initial cost is high but maintenance is not that much. Dealer does all my service and they are fair on there costs. The 7.3 looks like a great choice but people should not be afraid of the diesel, Ford has done a good job on their diesel.

That's what I'm thinking too. If I go this route,I think I'll stick with the standard 3.55 rear end, no ambitions for a 5er yet... I don't want to lose most of the bed storage when camping.

I fully know that the 6.2 will get the job done, but I just don't- and don't think I can- get myself to like that screaming high rpm type of power. Diesel guy at heart.

I wish they offered the 3.73 gears on the 250... but you have to get a 350, or drop down to the 6.2 to get 3.73's.
