2021 F350 Lariat SRW DIESEL

Hi.We have a 2019 F250 Lariat and are going to upgrade to a 2021 SRW F350 Lariat long box so we can get a larger and nicer trailer. We are looking at a 2021 Redwood 3401RL with the only extra option being 3 slide toppers. The dry weight according to Redwood is 13,246# with a 18% pin weight. We honestly will never have it pass 2,000 pounds of cargo so 15,246#. This would give a 20% pin weight of 3049#.

The truck GWVR is 12,400# and the curb weight with 48 gallons of fuel and 750# for us, pocket book, small cooler, etc and hitch is 8970#. This leaves 3,430# of cargo so with weight of 3049# Pin Box we would have only 381# left to spare.

I see on the Ford site that a 6'9 bed has 200# more payload capacity since the weight of the bed is less. It sure would be easier to park! If I am looking at this the right way the cargo capacity is 3430# and with shorter bed 3630#.

Am I being to ambitious in our quest to get this Coach? Thanks, Mitch

The F350 shortbed has a gvw of 11500 compared to the longbed at 12400.

I have a 2019 F350 Platinum shortbed. It has a payload of 3369 with the 11500 GVWR. The Lariat and Platinum are similar if you load up the options...

Know that a hitch adds 100lbs at least and usually and a bedcover will add a few hundred so consider the options you will add to your vehicle when calculating your weights.

While you are figuring the 20% properly it never seems to work out exactly that way when I tried to cut it close in the past.

Hope that helps you.

I had a f350 Supercab, long bed, SRW Diesel. Our first 5th did OK with a used 34 foot Avion. We upgraded to a longer heavier Teton that worked per the numbers with the SRW, but, in reality did not work Safely. It is a good thing the trailer brakes worked very well one day.
We upgraded to a F550 with a replacement rear full air suspension. We never looked back, and were always comfortable, even when we found the road that Lucy and Ricky filmed their travel trailer scenes on outside Palm Springs.
I will admit the Lariat, air suspension, 78 gallons of fuel, crew cab, Fontaine Classic Traveler body, and other stuff added to the comfort level for us and the Golden.

Agree with long box dually for the proposed trailer. Having tire redundancy alone is good. The duals will be more stable. Longer WB will ride better. Better pin location, simple hitch. Room for fuel. You could get an accurate pin weight easy enough.
I agree that a dually isn't ideal in the drive-thru, but just gotta walk a bit more.

X2. 5300 lb payload on my 2020 F-350 DRW Lariat.

No worries.

I think you'd really be happy with the dually. I've owned 3 now and to be honest I don't think I'd go back to a single rear wheel truck again. To me the only down side is buying two extra tires. If you are looking at New you obviously know the cost of them are crazy. My current dually is a 2012 F350 6.7 diesel that I bought new and if I remember correctly the dually was around 3k more. I'm sure it is more now but to me that little bit more to a already crazy price is worth it.

Remember, the short truck will not come with the 48 gal tank. Long truck will tow better.

Jack350 brings up a couple good points. The longer the chassis is on a tow vehicle the better it tows. Plus with a heavy 5ft wheel that larger fuel tank is a blessing.

I upgraded from a 150 eco boost to a 2017 XLT F 350 dually With all the options added When we upgraded to a 42’ Hertitage Glen. Having the rear dual wheels makes the towing so stable. No rolling.. like the truck is on rails. I love the truck. The Dually check box is well worth it

Personally I think what you plan will work out just fine.

The dually would tow a bit more stable but the drive train is the same except for tha rear axle. Id find the extra width a PITA most days. And since I tow an average of 3- days a year that is a lot of days being inconvenienced by the wide hips.

There is a reason the limits are there, and being right at the limit is not bad. Consider this, the attorneys forced the automaker to add in a "fudge factor".

Personally I think what you plan will work out just fine.

Regarding that manufacturer's garunteed "safety fudge factor"...I'm not so sure. Considering the ridiculous "recommended" max tow capacitues of some 1/2 ton pickups such as Ford's 'Eco' and Ram's 1500 3.0 Eco Diesel (12k..properly equipped of course?) leads one to believe they've lost their minds. The term 'White knuckle express' come to mind.
Bigger trucks are better.

This is the operative bit of information. If you drop down to the SB, then you lose that shiny new GVWR that Ford rolled out.

An F-350 SRW should work, but it's pretty close and that's a darn heavy 5er. If I were you and planning to pull such a large and heavy 5er, I'd be looking at an F-450 DRW.

You're getting into fairly nuanced truck shopping questions. While you can get good answers here, I always recommend that when people are asking detailed, shopping-based questions, they go to the actual truck forums. The best place to learn details about Forest River brand trailers is the Forest River Forums. The best place to learn details about Ford trucks is ... the Ford Truck Forums. Different tools for different jobs.

Good luck.

Ordered DRW today and got Coach

Well, I did it. Ordered a Race Red Lariat F350 dually today. Bought our 2020 Redwood 3901WB as well. 14,000 + dry weight. I believe that Big Red will handle it. Retirement in 3 months and 6 months of traveling next year! Thanks for all of your opinions and information.

Congrats on your purchase(s) and the pending retirement. I retired in July and have been very busy LOL!!! Lets hope next year will treat us much better than 2020 as to open campgrounds, no restrictions and a better and less divided country! We had to cancel a total of five trips this year due to fires out west, closed campgrounds early in the pandemic and later, restricted travel by numerous states. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Again, congratulations.

Awesome! Congratulations on an awesome truck! I love mine. You'll be glad you bought that truck for that 5er. You needed it. Have fun and best of luck during your retirement!

I'm not sure if there's a big difference in insurance & registration, but if you're going with an F-350 DRW, make sure to check out the F-450. While they will ride, drive and sit (dimensions) about the same, the F-450 has bigger brakes (not super important), bigger tires (which is both a pro and a con) and, most importantly, the wide-track front end that gives you a turning radius of a Honda Accord (hyperbole). Plus, the wide-track adds the front fender flares which really complement the DRW extended fenders. Here's a random red one to show what I'm talking about:

Either way. Congrats and enjoy the next chapter.

Are those manual locking hubs on the red 450?
