Thanks fellas. Not looking for "payback". The only way a truck pays you back is to drive it LONG after the payments are done. Jan 2020 will be 2 yrs I have had this Titan and, although it has been a really good truck, I am no where near paying it off yet. I was looking at the economics of trading now vs waiting a while for MY budget only. If budget was not a factor I would be driving at least a 3/4 ton long ago but until recently, most of my driving was short trips locally which is hard on a diesel with all the EPA mess on it. I do look time to time online at new ones. Shew. Where is my lottery tickets?

Extra cost for a diesel engine $8000.00, diesel costs more than gasoline , add DEF, and higher maintenance costs It will take you years to pay off a few mpg difference

How many miles have you accumulated over two years on the Titan?

I'd say if you haven't racked up a lot of miles and the Titan does what you want it to do for the most part, I wouldn't really worry about running it for a few more years. Maybe by then the 2020 3/4-ton and 1-ton truck prices will drop down a little considering the rate the big three are competing for the highest torque rating to brag about.

I have put 45k on it since Jan 2018 when new. Alot of towing my bass boat and some towing the camper. I have a 100k bumper to bumper warranty on it and lifetime powertrain but still got the itch for a diesel one day. Ideal trade time will be in 1-2 yrs from now.

Here's a Diesel, $57,250

https://www.everettbgmc.com/VehicleD...-AR/3536000633

They don't have any gas model 2500's. I guess either not many made, or sell out.

But if you are right, a comparable 2500 gas with same trim level would be $49,250.

Can you find one for that?

By the way, $57,250 is more than I paid for a Denali Dually here, in 2016.

And, I have two other gas trucks. Maintenance so far is way lower for the diesel.

When calculating the extra cost of a diesel , remember the 4 or $ 5,000 premium that you will get on sale/trade in , When I traded my 07 Cummins I received $4,600 more than the same gas truck .

Math:

You spent 9k up front for the diesel and lost 4.6k in depreciation by the time you traded.

If you had bought the gas version and invested that 9k...

Wow! I can't believe all these HIGH fuel mileage figures you guys are throwing out here. I have a 2011 Ram 2500 4x4 w/6.7 diesel, 3.73 gears and currently with 92,000 miles. When I first got it, I could get 16 mpg on the highway, but as the years have clicked away, so has the fuel mileage (even though I have done all the manufacturer's recommended maintenance and service). I currently get about 14.5 - 15 mpg empty on the highway. Towing my 13,000# 5er, depending on terrain and wind (wind is the worst mileage killer when coming from front or side or the best mileage booster when coming from the rear!) I get between 10.5 and 11.5 mpg. My Ram does not have DEF (2011 through 2013 6.7s didn't have it) and I have read on these forums that the DEF equipped post 2010 diesels do get better fuel mileage than those without it. So, maybe that is why my mileage figures are way lower than what most everybody says they are getting (even though I am a VERY conservative driver and pull my 5er on the Interstate at 68 mph). As far as cost vs: gas, diesel fuel where I live and travel is mostly only about 10 cents per gallon more than regular gas, yes service is more expensive but done less often and fuel filters every 15K miles does up the anty. But, otherwise, no difference is cost of one vs: the other. And, my 2011 Laramie Longhorn Ram is worth about $6,000 more than an equivalent gasser in our area if I was inclined to sell or trade it - which I am not. But, MOSTLY, I just LOVE driving and pulling with my truck. Would never go back to pulling any kind of trailer without the power and engine brake that the diesel gives me - no matter what the cost difference.

Got 10 to 9 mpg last trip to Ohio. running 70 and 80 mph. Truck is deleted, and no problems pulling.

I know the feeling. Running doubles in Utah and our company is happy if we can keep our MPG average to at least 4. And that's running empty for half those miles. . So when people talk towing MPG I chuckle even though it's not a fair comparison.

I see all 3 are now making the 3L Diesel and I know the 5k Cummins was dropped. 3L seems alot small to to haul the mail they say they can do. Mileage not towing really stands out. I doubt I would do a 1500 diesel tho but they have been using them in Europe for decades (and get alot better mpg...less EPA crap I bet).
