2500HD with 6.6 gas

Has anyone driven the new 2500hd with the 6.6 gas engine? I am thinking of up grading next spring. Not sure I want to spend the extra for a duramax. Towing a 7600 lb Coachmen Freedom Express Liberty.

To answer your question, I have not but I'd like to. My son's dealership has a couple but I haven't been over there.

You would be fine.

If towing a lot the diesel makes sense. Get your money back when you sell.

Not the same brand but we pull our 10,000 IB fifth wheel with the Ram 6.4 gas. Does a fine job and this opinion is coming from someone that was pulling with a powerstroke earlier this season.

Forgot to mention we have the 3.73 gearing and seems to do just fine. But, we don't have to worry about huge hills or mountains here in Iowa.

2500HD with 6.6 gas

I drove one about 2 weeks ago and it seems like plenty of power. It’s got some torque behind it. I intentionally went on a bumpy road to see how “harsh” the ride might be, to be honest it wasn’t terrible. A little light in the rear but not much worse than the 1500. Looking over the hood, well it’s big lol. Not to sure of fuel mileage if it’s increased or not cause the one I drove only had 21 miles on it and was 9.3 average but with that few miles who really knows. I would think it might be 13-15 without towing. Overall I was impressed with how it drove and the power it had. You can definitely feel the difference between the 6.0 and the 6.6 on the torque end of things. Highway it was smooth. Hopefully by spring the kinks are being worked out and I can go get mine [emoji16][emoji16]. And it does look much better in person than in pictures.

3/4 tons with gasoline engines towing trailers 10,000 lbs or less seems to be a perfect combination. If I didn't live at 5,000' and tow to 11,000', I'd have gone with gasoline. They are excellent platforms and getting better every year.

Old Faithful 6.0

I have had nothing other than the 6.0 in every gas truck I have purchased since about 2000/2001, and I have purchased more gas HD Silverados and than I can begin to think of since then for my business and personal use. Without exaggerating, I can say I have had no major engine problems with any truck powered by the 6.0. For me, I believe this is a perfect engine.

I would be afraid to buy a gas truck with a different engine — not saying that a different engine might not actually be better — I’ve just been so pleased with the 6.0, I would kick myself if the 6.0 was available and I chose a different engine, only to find out it didn’t live up to what I have been accustomed to.

The 6.0L is not available in “the new” 3/4 ton... only the new 6.6L gas and the samish 6.6L Duramax diesel.

yeah, my 2015 2500 6.0 Chevy does a great job thus far. Only 39K miles on it, so it has a long, long ways to go. And like most folks do to their vehicles, i have made some changes that improved upon the pickup that I don't want to give up and start all over again. While the new 6.6L is compelling, there are some aspects to it and the overall pickup that give me pause in considering one. if I had a definitive need for another pickup, then those concerns could be easy to overlook. So I will have to demur and let everyone else take the leap and get all the bugs worked out. But the numbers on the engine and such look very, very good.

I would go for it, my 2015 with the 6.0 works great hauling my 34.5 ft trailer over the mountains to Lake Tahoe.

GM has had that 3.73 rear end in the Duramax trucks since the first year they made the engine, 2001. It is mated to the Allison 1000 transmission and you do not need anything else. It has worked perfectly for me.

All the 4.10 would get you is a slightly easier start from a standing stop and lower fuel mileage.

Beginning in 2017 the Duramax is NOT the same as any prior year. It is a brand new engine. The ONLY similarity to the 2001-2016 engines is that they aer all 6.6 liters. Nothing else is interchangeable

... and the entire thread is about the “new” 2020 stuff so it IS sameish to the 3 years before it, right?

The OP isn’t talking about the Duramax, he’s talking about the new 6.6L gas engine as far as I can tell.

Well, in 2020 the GM Duramax gets an entirely new 10 speed transmission, so even in that limited context it is not the same.

Personally Id LOVE to have that, it would make it so much easier to stay in the "Sweet Spot" of around 2100 RPMs while towing heavy on level ground and 2400 in mountainous terrain.

Im just not willing to pay the cost of a new truck.

I believe that is true as well.

it was your post #12 that mentioned the "sameish 6.6L Duramax". I was just pointing out that is not the same as previous versions of that engine.
