3/4 Ton Pickup: WDH?
I have a 3/4 ton pickup that drops 1/4" when hooked up to my TT (weighs 5,600 lb loaded with full water tank). Is WDH really necessary?

I would still use WDH for stability on rough roads and prevent a dangerous situation or loss of control and some type of sway control.

How does it tow? Do you have any sway issues? You probably don't need WDH but may need sway control.

While your rig only drops 1/4 inch, that also still means that all your tongue weight is still on the ball. some weight being distributed to the front suspension, helps smooth the ride, and makes braking more even. Safer that way.

Just a thought. If you're only dropping 1/4" you might want to confirm your tongue weight. Maybe a little light. Should be 10-15% of loaded trailer weight. My 3/4 and 1 ton trucks both squatted some when hitched. Albeit the trailer I had was over 7,000lb loaded.

I was wondering the same thing. I just bought a 2017 2500 and will be camping in 2 weeks. I am planning on not using it and see how things go. I'm camping an hour from home and no major highways - so we'll see.

I just went from a 1/2 ton to a new 3/4 ton..I kept everything from the 1/2 ton setup and moved it to my 3/4 ton, including the anti-sway.. Maybe it wasn't needed But I had it, so I used it..
My squat was a little more than yours, about 3/4 of an inch.

I still run the anti-sway. The problem comes in when trying to get a more level set up. Trailer is about 1" high on front (26', dual torsion axle). I can't find a sweet spot to get that 1" lower with WDH...but if I don't use the torsion bars and just run without I get closer.

I have a 3/4 truck and the trailer is about 6200 loaded. I pull the trailer home from storage (1 mile) w/o the wdh bars on and it's like driving a bucking bronco! The bars definitely help to smooth out the ride.

A longer shank would drop the trailer an inch easy enough?

X2. I can't think of any "good" reason not to have a WDH on your rig combination.

X2 with hankpac. Even though you're under 6K lbs, take everything else that you're adding to your weight and especially the distribution of that added weight. I pull with a F250 FX4 diesel with a complete tow package and because of the weight on the hitch, I added an Equilizer WDH and the handling is the difference between night and day, not to mention the added control in the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado. Do yourself a favor, spend the money and enjoy the added safety.

I use the same 12K Equal-i-zer brand WDH with my F-250 that I used with my F-150. I want it for the sway control more than for weight distribution but the WD bars help in handling bumpy roads. I did have to buy a new shank with a longer drop for the F-250.

I use it myself...even though my trailer is heavier than yours.
Makes the combination more stable . I use sway bars only if I have to travel on highways at 100km/h (60 m/h).
Go with what your comfortable with...give it a try and you'll see.
I prefer having them on for stability,

You put you question out to the members of this forum for an answer, so here's mine: I have a GMC 1500 with all the tow options pulling right at 7000# of TT. I tried towing without the WDH and it only took about a mile to convince me to stop and set up the WDH. I have talked to many campers who have 1/2 tons, 3/4 tons and full ton pickups. Without a doubt the overwhelming majority of these people state to use the WDH for anti-sway, and peace of mind among other reasons. I have one of my friends who had a Ford F-350 Super-Duty, crew cab, and other bells and whistles. He is the only person I know that states: "I just aim the truck and if the horse trailer or camper wants to go with me it better follow me close". I always tell his wife that when IT does happen I want photos of the horse trailer or camper lying on it's side and Charles steady pulling it along.

A good gust of wind could start sway you may not pull out of without the sway control. Until you experience it you are in dreamland.

Thanks for the good scoop. I've been using the WDH and sway...just curious about not hooking up the bars...but I think I will just keep hooking them up and maybe look for a longer shank to drop that ball height a smidge.

I would at least still use the anti-sway. I had a 7600lb pull behind and I liked using the WDH and anti-sway with my F250. It rode better than without them.

It has always been my philosophy to never skimp on: tires, brakes, and WDH. Regardless of which brand you choose, the benefits of weight distribution and anti-sway feature will give you peace of mind while towing, will smooth out your ride, improve braking performance, reduce the effects of cross-winds, and bring less stress to your tow vehicle.
