I ignore the payload number and focus on the GVWR and GAWR numbers.
Same here with more emphasis on axle, wheels & tires ......

I would look at the anderson ultimate hitch. I towed my 8k 5th wheel with my 14 ram 1500 rated at 10,500 pounds all day. for the $ I believe the anderson ultimate is the best option for towing with a short bed truck.

I would try and stay a few thousand under your trucks max towing rating.

FYI, here's a link to an older thread that I started on this very topic back in January 2015 when I was in the same position as the OP.

I believe I've said this to you before you Old Coot- you are a brave man... But don't get me wrong. I realize you're on a fixed income, and if you're anything like me, you do what you can to get out there and enjoy the country. I've pulled boats, trailers, etc. etc. for years not worrying anything about weight. With a small truck! Not a clue. Lucky to still be here. Hey- if it fits on your trailer ball, it must be okay to pull. Don't know when I got much wiser, but it wasn't too long ago, and I'm not sure how long it will last.

The interesting thing is that the VIN# on my GMC 2500 says payload is 2950, but the sticker on the door says 2254. Which one is the real number.

How does your VIN give payload limit?

I have no idea who/how you contacted at GMC but based on the answer you were given, I'd wager they were not the correct person/department to ask. Does 2950 match the "brochure" weight for your model? If you are going to trust them vs your sticker, then it should be in writing and kept saved.

You might think about making a trip to the scales to find out the real answer for yourself.

The last Crew Cab Tundra I looked at had a payload of less than 1000lbs (892lbs IIRC). We laughed when we found several 4-Runners on the same dealer lot that had higher payload numbers than their "Big Tundra".
That Tundra crew cab would be "overloaded" with 5 average American men sitting in it. As I observe all of the rigs out there, the saying "Who you gonna believe, me(the sticker in this case) or your own eyes?" by Groucho Marx comes to mind.

The Door. That is the number for that truck....as you know there are many many configurations and options that affect the Series of Truck model and since it is a competition the brochures will always list the max payload available

And when in Doubt....run down to a weigh station and get the real world weight of the truck and calculate it yourself!!!

Scales won't tell you shatter factory says it will carry.. only what you were able to stack in.

The vin number is probably base truck weight before options.

I'm not concerned. My empty pin weight is 1425. I'll never exceed 2254 payload. It was just interesting to me there is so much disparity.

Don't be so sure. Your easily 1800-1900 loaded pin weight, add 250 for the hitch weight, passengers(s) in cab, anything else in bed or cab. Your over 2254.

Not hardly. I carry nothing in the bed, 2 adults in the cab, do not carry excessive amounts of "stuff" with us. Even at max weight rating of the 5er at 10000 lbs. Which we're not close to I would still have a small margin
Biggest problem I have is that my truck barely settles when I hook up loaded for a month long trip.

GVWR minus scales weight equals true payload

The cargo debate has been beaten so many times, it should be noted that being a few hundred over on a 2500 is less an issue (non-issue) than dragging a FW with a 1500 and a very low cargo capacity.

I little off topic but ~~~ decided to buy a 5th wheel tailgate for my new truck. Many are out of composite but not real strong. I bought the Husky made from aluminum, pricy but very happy with it. No need to drop the gate or get in/out when hitching.

The point ~~ it took 2 of us to get the F350 gate off as it is a tad heave for one. The 5er gate is extremely light. I could not find the weight of the F350 gate with camera and step but it is at least 5X the weight of the 5er gate. Makes life easier too.
