Actually, it does. For the Silverado 1500, this is how it works. Rear axle gross weight goes from 3800 lbs to 4150 lbs, GVWR goes from 7100 lbs to 7300 lbs and GCWR goes from 15,000 lbs to 17,800 lbs. You gain an extra 200 lbs of GVWR, which is offset a little by the slightly larger axle, enhanced cooling system and 220 amp alternator. How much, I can't say for sure, but you do gain some payload capacity.
I suspect Ford has a similar gain in payload capacity.
