Advice on purchasing Extended warranty for F-150

I am shopping for an extended warranty plan for my 2014 F-150, Eco-boost. I use it as my everyday vehicle (13,000 miles annually) as well as my tow vehicle for our TT. What things should I be aware of, stay away from, etc. I usually keep my vehicles long term and do not trade up or sell off. Thanks for your time on this.

I know that some folks here are going disagree, and provide all kinds of "examples," and that's OK, but generally speaking, buying extended warranties is a waste of money. (There's a good reason they sell these policies - they make money.)

Insurance (which is what this is), as a rule (or should be a rule) is to protect you from a major cash outlay that could really impact your lifestyle, like having to pay $300,000 for medical if you had an auto accident. But if you're paying $2000 to offset even a $3000 repair, is it worth it? I did buy one on a 1986 Caravan and it covered an AC compressor replacement, but the compressor was the same price as the warranty, so I would have broke even either way.

Especially on vehicles, if you do it, make sure you know EXACTLY what it's going to cover and how much it's going to cost. I've seen lots of stories about people buying these for pretty big bucks, then finding out they don't cover major stuff.

That being said, some people just "feel better" having an extended warranty - and it's hard to put a price on that; if that's you, go for it.

That is my view also. Shop around, find a plan you like, then just put that money in a dedicated savings account every month. If something breaks, you have the money. If you don't, you have a nice down payment for a new vehicle.

Having worked in shops and dealing with the warranties, I agree that they are a waste of money. They are in business to make money. Generally speaking, you will pay far more for the warranty then it will ever save you. Some shops will even refuse to accept them because of the hassle and they trying to undercut them to save as much as possible. Set that money aside and save for when you need to make a repair.

Check out Fords ESP warranty. I had one on my F350 and it covered my radiator replacement and steering pump. The warranty is good at any Ford dealer which is nice when you're on the road.

IMO this come down to comfort. I have been retired and a full timer for a few years now. I feel comfort knowing that Ford offers a wrap around warranty for the life of the loan. At $10,000 for a turbo charger on my 6.7, I want to feel that comfort...

Start a bank account called "My Insurance Company" Everytime you are offered an extended warranty on any purchase deposit those monies in "My Insurance Company". Whenever you have a clam, take the money out. If you did this over your lifetime you would retire a much wealthier person.

The Ford ESP is the only one worth buying IMO. I used my 7 year/100K ESP twice, the 2nd time at 6.5 years old and 92K miles on the clock. I about broke even on mine, but was still glad I bought it. I pulled into home from our last 4K mile mountain trip with 99,600 miles on the truck. I never broke down on the road in over 25,000 miles towing, but a good benefit is Ford would have towed it to the nearest dealer free of charge.

I would recommend the following resource. They sell a ford warranty - which IMHO is better than the no name brands. Ford takes care of everything and all with OEM parts. Once registered you are in Ford's system and whenever you need to go to a Ford dealer it is automatically linked to your truck's VIN. I debated this forever, and when I hit 65,000 miles I bit the bullet and bought their bumper to bumper through 150,000 miles on my 2014 Ecoboost. For me, the big deal was the turbochargers - have heard too many stories of those babies failing after 100K so yes, insurance. But if I have to get new turbochargers Ford warranties them for 12 months from install, and I figure they would be good for another 100K plus if that turned out to be the case. I now travel with peace of mind, for my wife especially. Two weeks after I bought the warranty, we had to be towed down from the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire. The computer control panel that ran the fuel pump broke - all fixed in one day at the local Ford deal, less my $100 deductible. Good feeling, that. Anyway, I bought mine from this dealer in Massachussetts of all places - only guy who was offering discounted warranties online. Great service, piece of cake, they see a bunch of these every month. Buying extended warranties is a crap shoot. It is like buying life insurance. It is something you need to have, but hope you never have to use it. I have always bought the Ford extended warranty for my vehicles. I keep them an average of 10 years each. Newer vehicles have so many electronic items on them, the warranty would pay for itself. This happened on two of my vehicles. Glad I had it. Lost money on the other vehicles as I did not have to use the extended warranty. Guess it is the peace of mind of having the extended warranty. Just my experience and opinion........................

Problems are frequently manufacturing issues and when it is there is a good chance there is a recall. Make sure you check those before taking a vehicle in. That is better than insurance and cheaper too.

If you stay with the Ford esp plans, you can usually shop on the internet and save hundreds. Get the lowest on-line price and take it to your local dealer. They may match it. I just buy new trucks every three years now and don't worry about extended warranties.

If your going to buy one be sure it's a ford extended warranty not an independent insurance policy. Also zero deductible is the way to go in case you have a problem that cost less than the deductible. It is great peace of mind. I once had an xtended warranty from ford that was unlimited mileage. You'll never see that again. That was way back when.

Do this; since you keep 'em long term, calculate what you spend on repairs over the life of your previous vehicles, chances are unless you blow up a major component, it's cheaper to pay as you go, assuming you stay away from the stealer. Just sayin' If "peace of mind" is your objective, then buy a comfort policy.

If their opinion is worth anything to you, Consumer Reports says "don't do it." They recommend against buying extended warrantees on pretty much anything. I usually find their advice valid. I did get one on my fifth wheel...sort of made sense that a house loaded with appliances etc. running down our wonderfully paved roads might just require occasional repairs, and it did pay for itself. I've never had one on a motor vehicle and I think I've come out ahead so far. But as others have said. it is a personal choice.

Google "floodfordesp" they are the Ford dealer that sells the Ford ESP coverage cheaper then anyone else. You can enter your vehicle online and see what the ESP coverage will cost you.

That is what I did and then took their quote to my dealer and they matched it. My dealer cried and said they were losing money but they matched it because they knew if I didn't buy from them I was going to buy it from Flood Ford.

Turbo's aren't cheep, and you have two. Their pricing is very reasonable.

Ford has the B to B 3/36 and 5/60,000 on drivetrain. I wouldn't waste good money on a warranty that we get for free.

That's exactly what I did and it saved a bunch of money. 6 year, best ESP warranty, 120K miles, $100 deductible.

I'll sell it before the warranty is up, it is transferable, and that should help resale value.

It's 2012, 85K; 25% towing; ZERO issues. Have never used the warranty.

Only you can decide whether that works for you or not.
