air bags with wd hitch

When using air bags with a wd hitch do you level truck with air bags then hookup wd or hookup wd hitch like normal then add air to bags as added support? In my mind the above question is perfectly clear sure hope its not just my mind.

You need to adjust the height with the bags first and then adjust the WDH properly. Changing the air bags after adjusting/connecting the WDH will get it way out of adjustment.

This. Airing up after you set up your WDH is the same as using your tongue jack to lift the tongue and truck up to hook up your chains. You're unloading your WDH and putting the weight back on the rear axle.

Either, or - doesn't matter. Note that you should not be leveling the TV with the bags - that's what the WDH is for. Once you've determined the optimum pressure for the bags (lots of towing), it don't matter (before/after hookup) when you air them up.

I set my ram 1500 and WD up before I had air bags. The AB were a gift from someone who had traded trucks and couldn't use them anymore.
No wanting to change my setup I only put 5-7psi in the bags to stiffen the ride. Doesn't change the height, but reduces bobbing on bad roads. And Michigan has plenty of bad roads.

I'm running ~22 PSI in the Airlifts. Lotsa frost heaved asphalt on the prairies. Many people refer to this junk as highways.

I know a lot of people that have installed air bags on their pickups to increase the load capacity. Wrong approach.

Yes, the airbags will keep the tail end from sagging but the tires and rear axle aren't any stronger than before the bags were added.

Only reason the airbags should be used is to keep the rear suspension from bottoming out when hitting dips or bumps. The air bag is a progressive spring and really only increases the stiffness as the air bag is compressed.

Over inflating them to raise the rear is just asking for trouble if the load was in excess of the axle's rating to start with.

Well when I ordered my new Ram I optioned out for air ride suspension. Talk about a neat feature it's awesome. Worth every penny of the $1500 cost. Later RJD

That's what I'm using them for.
Stiffen up rear suspension. Already have reflex shocks, air bags are just a little additional support.

X2
Having owned and towed with 3 different trucks with air bags . Air bags first then adjust WDH . Air bags work wonderful if installed and used right .
