There is nothing wrong with a '17 brand new truck, however it may have been built in '16 and there was a period when (at least in my area) Ram offered huge discounts and a "free" CTD upgrade. If this applies to the truck you're looking at then the dealer may be asking too much. And yes, get quotes for '18 /'19 models to compare.

Based on my research, I don't see a 2018/2019 similarly equipped 3500 going for 47K. Maybe a Tradesman model, but not one with the options of this truck.

I doubt I could get one similarly equipped for anything less than high $50-60K

EDIT: As far as build date, the MDH value on the door jamb is 112421, which I believe means Nov, 24th, at 2100 (9PM). So, late 2017 build? Or does that mean late 2016 build (ie early in the production year)?

Maybe Im too spoiled with the deal I got on my current truck. 2 year old 4x4, Diesel, 17K miles, Bighorn edition (nicely optioned).. only thing missing for me was back up camera. Got it for 35K in 2016.

Just traded my ram 2016 2500 6.4 for a new 3500 CTD.. They couldn't come quite as low as I wanted, but offered more for my traded. Doesn't matter to me cause the price was where I wanted it to be..So if you trade maybe you can make up the difference there.

trucks like you are looking at are pretty popular... someone will buy it at that price... what are your alternative model prices at for a newer same model truck?

If it is really the truck you want AND you plan to keep it for many years, it is likely a good deal. If not, keep looking.

By my estimation (not actively shopping), I'd be looking at upper 50's to low 60's for a similarly equipped 2019. so, this is probably 10-12K lower than a newer same model, if I pushed the dealer hard.

I probably shouldn't admit this, but I have 25k wrapped up in my 6.0 Powerstroke '07 F350 CC LWB king Ranch Dually.

So, 47k for a new one sounds pretty good to me. (No, I don't want to sell).

You also need to look at NADA values.
If the truck was stolen or totaled tomorrow, what would insurance pay out on it? They will value it as a two year old vehicle with an adjustment for low mileage.

I think 45k would be a great deal for you, dealer may loose a little, but cut their costs to sell

My question here is, why is there a new 2-year old truck still sitting on the lot? It's not very often that a dealer gets married to the vehicle on the lot and doesn't want to sell unless they get their price. Could this have been damaged or salvaged (flooding, etc.) and still have it untitled?

As others have mentioned, this will be a used truck once it is titled, so that has to be considered. Circumstances may change even though the plans are to keep the truck for many years. Our buying philosophy has been to buy with intentions we will sell in the shorter term. That philosophy worked to our benefit on our last motor home purchase when we decided to sell in two years.

By George Band, I think I've got it!!!

Now, if we can just get people to stop it with DW/DH BS. Those are the only acronyms which really really bug me for some reason. Like nails on a chalkboard. For the record, happily married for 26 years, but never go around referring to wife as Dear Wife (except in greeting cards, and then use her first name. lol. Ugh. barf. Sorry. End of rant.

I always thought the DW designation meant Double Wide....often as an affectionate name for someone's DW....

I guess that rates would be cheaper since it's already two years old....If you lived in a State like NC that has a Personal Property tax on vehicles this would be a plus or if your cost to register like in CA is based on the value of the truck it would help you there and save you some $$$ over a 2018 or 2019 model.

Believe me, I get wanting a new truck!!! However, if your 3/4t is in good shape you can likely tow most 5ers up to say 34-35’.Check the truck ratings to be sure.
I use my 2016 RAM 2500 as a daily driver and it has coil springs vs the 3500 with leafs. Huge difference in the ride which helps with my bad back.
I have the Longhorn package with about everything on it and it was $70ish as I recall. Gorgeous truck! I’ll bet if you look on the used market you’ll find a 2017 with say 20,000 miles it’ll be in the same price range as the new one you’re looking at.
Good luck!
Bill

This think I have noticed in these heavier model trucks is that they are not deeply discounted. I assume that the price of new models are going up so quickly that the left overs are not discounted as much as before. I have a friend at a Ford dealership that told me they are selling about 3.7 trucks per car sold. The truck market is a sellers market right now.... Soon as gas hits $4-$5/gallon again, that will change
