Am I being unreasonable?

So, kinda stumbled across a dealership, about 4 hours away from me, that actually has a 2017 Ram 3500, Bighorn edition, CTD, AIsin transmission, tow package etc...

They had it listed for $49,500. It is brand new, never been titled, which I found somewhat odd, but I guess there's a few around.

Anyways, I have a 2014 2500 , and I have been contemplating getting a 3500 in anticipation of eventually getting a 5er. Figure I have plenty of time to wait for a good deal. This, I thought, I could work a good deal, since it is already 2 model years old.

Most they would come off the truck is 2K. $47,500 plus TTL is best they would do. I think that's too high, even if it is new. I would think they'd want to get rid of it, or at least be willing to deal, but apparently not.

Maybe Im being unreasonable?

Unaccepted, they should be offering at least 20% off for a 2017, thing is 2 model years old.

I got a total of $9,000 off on a special order 2019 f250. Sometimes you can make out better on current model year vehicles than leftovers (I don't know why)

How's many miles on it? TTL? what is that? If it is trade maybe they are moving money from that to the new truck. Having 2 numbers to play with makes it hard to say yeah good or bad deal

It's brand new, no miles.

TTL = tax, title, license

SRW

Dealer says MSRP was $62K.. I don't know about that.. Says he cant go below $47,500. I offered $42K. Maybe $42K is too low, but $47,500 is too high in my mind for 2 model years old.

Haven't priced comparable 2019's.

I was not playing with trade. Going straight for bottom line price on the vehicle.

I bet someone drove it as a dealer car... And they don't look at it as a 2 year old truck. But as a new truck on the lot. And or it had been dealer traded a bunch so they aren't in a bind to sell. So your typical thoughts might not apply. Also someone eventually will pay what they want.

Around where I live msrp is good price as most have second stickers. If it really is 62k MSRP I don't think it's too bad of a price.

Also see what they want for a 19, there are so many games in the auto business nothing surprises me anymore.

I think he'll get what he is asking for it and then some.

It's still a new truck. 47.5k for a new Diesel is a great buy.

Looking at the odometer picture in their ad, it's got 65 miles. Assuming it hasn't been driven beyond that.

Sticker says $62K. 20% off that is $49.6K. Maybe I am being too unreasonable in offering $42K.

They probably will get what they want out of it.. We will see if they come back with a different offer. Probably won't, but Im fine with my 2500.

Until you do cost comparisons for identically equiped trucks for model years 2018 and 2019, $47,500 is just a number on paper. However, with similarly equiped truck comparisons completed, then you have something meaningful to work with.

Consider asking the dealer for the vin/build sheet, then go shopping!

I agree...

I had a link to a website where you can get a copy of the build sheet by VIN, but it no longer works. Website has the VIN. I may do that, and see. I have a picture of the sticker, so I can go that way, and build a similar vehicle.

I don't care for the new 2019 front end, so 2018 or older for me.

Ok good on miles... I was so expecting to see 8k or something to explain the age. Or for them to keep that info till signing. Wonder what the build date is? My father once got a truck that was part of an auto show that travel the US

Price wise Call around, make another offer same value. Worse they can say is no.

If the MSRP sticker price is 62K and they came down to 47.5K on a truck with 65 miles, You're doing just fine. And, offering 42k seems a bit lowballish to me.

My recent truck purchase was the truck in my signature. In '16 it MSRP'd at $49k. I purchased it in flawless condition with 33k on the odometer and was very happy with spending $35k on it. It was actually a very fair price for that particular truck in my area.

As another comparison, my next door neighbor just bought a brand new 2017 Limited Ram 3500 Cummins for $58k and 42 miles on the odometer. Not sure what it MSRP'd at but he got huge discounts from Dave Smith motors in ID.

Clarkbre - is your neighbors truck a dually or SRW?

I might need to reconsider my offer.

I would check to see what a used one goes for. That is what it will be worth as soon as you drive it off the lot. It will be a 2 yr old used truck.

His truck's a SRW. I actually just talked to him. He paid $58k and the sticker was listed at $72k.

On another note, in my search for an F250, I test drove a heavily discounted 2018 priced to move for the new year. It was stickered at $48,825 and the absolute lowest they would go was $41,000.

Except that it isn't a 2 year old used truck. It's a brand new truck that has not been driven or in service for 2 years. The warranty would be that of a brand new truck in 2017 and the higher price would reflect that. It's not as though 24 months of a 60 month warranty has been used up sitting on the lot. You would be the first, original owner of that truck putting all of the miles on it.

A used truck would be a lower price because some other guy had the luxury of using the warranty and racking up the first 20k miles on it.

That's what I based my 42K offer on. Used Bighorn 3500's (2016-2017 MY) in my area (when you can find them), are about 42-45K.

I agree clarkbre, it's not used, but will be as soon as I drive off. Granted, it will have a warranty, but still.

It's probably a decent deal at $47K. If I can get them down to maybe $45K, it might be worth it. Have to think about that a bit.

I'm only on my second pickup, so please excuse my lack of acronym knowledge. SRW = Single Rear Wheel? I think might have gotten that right from context. Had no idea what TTL or whatever that was either!
