Thanks for the reply.

But since the hitch STILL incorporates a BALL hitch, chains in many states are required.
I would never use an Andersen but definitely recommend chains to anyone that does. I do not need a law to tell me how to be safe.
This picture was a Momentum 5er. Chains anyone?

Traffic collision of some sort I gather. Any hitch would have a similar or worse appearance after an accident

No & no a standard 5th wheel would not.

According to what I wrote above after reading on another forum this reportedly happened when the truck hit either a dip or curb from the person whose truck it was (reported on the other forum 3rd hand).

There may very well be much more to the story, like a very large 5er or similar possibly but with the internet, even could have been aliens.

Whatever happened here, I can not imagine this sort of damage occurred under normal use, I don't fully believe the 'pothole' or 'hit the curb' story. To me it looks like the the hitch was torn sideways with brute force. However, nobody seems to know the whole story, and as one poster said in the other forum 'the Andersen haters were having a field day'. I've seen a few 5th wheel hitches and pinboxes at junkyards and I don't know the whole story there either.

The failed hitch in question if a first generation model, not current production. I used the Andersen when I was pulling my 19000lb 5ver, and I automatically connected chains. It only took about 5 seconds per chain. So why not???

It says right on the sticker "2". That looks like the second generation to me. Wasn't the first gen steel? The one above appears to be aluminium tubing that gave out.

On edit: You are incorrect. I just visited the website and that failed hitch IS the current one available.

Here's the link: https://andersenhitches.com/Products...k-version.aspx

I do stand corrected. I took a look at my 2nd gen in the garage and the crushed unit is a 2nd gen. Andersen did or does offer a steel version of their hitch. The AL one weighs about 35lb, the steel one weights 75lb. At my age I opted for the AL version. Never had a problem and frequently removed hitch from the truck by myself.
