Anyone w/Ram Ecodiesels towing a Micro-lite or Mini-lite?

I just recently took delivery of a Flagstaff 25BRDS Micro-lite and went on our first getaway with it. I'm using a 2015 Ram Laramie Ecodiesel to tow with. I'm just looking for some feedback from owners who have an Ecodiesel that tow Mico-lites and Mini-lites. As well do you have a GDE tuner and how does it perform?

The biggest issue with those RAM trucks is their payload. Most are very low and your trailer is going to have a pretty high tongue weight.

The guy that owns the UPS store I get my packages delivered to has a 2011 Ram 4 door and his payload is 1050#. He tows a small 18' trailer currently. My guess is that it is as large as he can tow.

The OP is asking about the Ram Ecodiesel, which wasn't around in 2011.

It's indicative of the RAM chassis in general. Poor payload.

True that, except Dodge supposedly improved that in their 2019 lineup.
I hope they have.

I haven't looked at them yet. Proof is going to the dealer and looking at ones on their lot.

Have a friend with a 17 RAM 1500 who wants to get a 1/2T towable 5th wheel. I suggested he look at his payload first. Was just under 1500#

We have a 2017 EcoDiesel 1500 and tow a 2018 25FKS microlite if 5000+lbs with zero issues. Great mileage towing, 11-12 mpg. We did have to adjust hitch height from the Silverado we had. The Chevy did not pull the tt as well as the Ram according to my DH.

We have the same setup and the GDE tune. Have about 7k miles towing so far including mountains. No issues.

Thanks for the response. How does the GDE tuner compare with the Factory when comes to towing?

The GDE tune changes the shift point in the transmission to let it minimize RPMs while climbing and descending hills. Also if you pay the extra $50 the GDE has a turbo brake that controls speed when descending hills without using the foot brake. It also increases mpg, hp, and torque to assist while towing. I would not be without the GDE tune.

Tow vehicle is a 2018 Ram 5'7" box Eco Diesel w/ GDE engine and Transmission tunes and towing a Rockwood 2440 WS 7000#'s loaded (checked at a scale) Getting 12 -14 mpq & more at times - 6000 mile round trip MI to SD and down into MX - The package preformed great and couldn't be happier! 200 mile trip back from getting the GDE tunes installed (not towing anything) I got 35 mpg which is insane for a full size size pickup.

Totally agree with morganrc1955!

I tow a 2015 rockwood minilite 2503S. Weight fully loaded 5800 lbs. My truck is a 2015 Ram TRADESMAN Ecodiesel quad cab. Tows great. Average mpg towing is 14 to 16 mpg. I do not have a tune. My truck payload is 1580 lbs. Your payload is probably around 1350 lbs. That truck will tow your camper with ease. It is underrated for its towing ability. As far as payload I wouldn't worry about being over your payload number as long as you are not grossly over it.

Thank you for posting your payload number. it would be nice if Ecodiesel owners would post payload sticker numbers or pics of them.
i would love to be disproved about the lower payload capacities. also it would give prospective buyers what the actual payload numbers are.
of course, payload sticker numbers are based on the truck when it left the factory. doesn't account for added items, like toppers, bed covers and so on.

Thanks for the reply.... but ya my weight is 1375lbs for payload. We took it out on a weekend getaway last weekend for our first trip with it (80 miles) and was pleased with the handling. I didn’t push the pickup to hard but was wondering from other Ecodiesel owners if the GDE tune is worth it.

Go to this website https://www.ram1500diesel.com The GDE tune is highly spoken of on this website. This website is a must for an ecodiesel owner. I don't have the tune, but many people have it and love it.

We tow a 32' Rockwood that weighs 8000 lbs with our EcoDiesel. Our Stock EcoDiesel pulled it ok BUT after the GDE tune the trailer felt like it lost 2000 lbs. Now, I tow at a lower RPM, seldom shifts going up moderate hills and best of all, the Turbo Brake that they enable is fabulous when towning. Similar to an exhaust brake. You will have no problem towing but get the GDE Tune. Your fuel mileage will increase as well.

My 2014 Ecodiesel crew cab 6 4 Bed pulls my ForestRiver Hemisphere 35ft TT just fine. You might want to consider different tires, not those Good year SRA s.

P.S. make sure you set it up with the proper WD system
