Remember the slogan..."Click It Or Ticket"?

It’s also illegal to speed in all the states but most people speed. If you keep the shades pulled down at the back who will know anyone is in the camper. I was talking to a retired Sheriff on my last camping trip and he was telling me all about his wife riding in the camper

Looks like a pretty good summary below..

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website, whether the transport of passengers in the bed of a pickup truck is allowed or not depends solely on the laws in each state. The passengers are allowed to ride in the cargo area of a pickup truck without any restrictions in 19 states: AL, AK, AZ, DE, ID, IN, IA, KY, MN, MS, MT, NH, ND, OK, SD, VT, WA, WV, WY. Other states allow it only under certain circumstances. For example, some states mandate that the ride is limited to non-interstate highways or to rides of a certain length.

Many states restrict passengers under a specific age from traveling in the back of a pickup truck. The age restriction varies from 12 to 19 years, depending on the state. Some states allow it only if there is no room in the passenger’s compartment (HI, MO, TX) or if it is work related (AR, DC, HI, KS, MO, NJ, UT and WI). In contrast, other states require that children younger than 12 are properly restrained in seats installed in the truck bed in order to be allowed to travel in this area.

Several states allow the transport of passengers in the cargo space of a truck when riding on rural roads and other non-interstate and state highways for farming purposes, during parades and if the speed does not exceed 25 mph (OH) or 35 mph (PA and SC). In many states the restrictions are not applicable in case of emergencies. Illinois appears to have some of the strictest laws regarding travel in the back of a pickup truck; seat belts are required for all passengers in all seating positions. Violation of the seat belt laws is a standard offense in IL and riding in pickup truck beds is always illegal.

Heck, Coyotes carry lots of people in enclosed vehicles without proper restraint. Plenty of people think this is such a good idea, they encourage it.

Not necessarily. If the second vehicle was an 8 passenger vehicle, like say, a Minivan, then the sight seeing can all be done from a single vehicle, and the tow vehicle would stay at the campground. We've done similar when we had extra kids with us. I would drive the truck and trailer, wife followed with the plethora of kids in the minivan. At the campground, truck stayed put and we'd do all the running around in the minivan.

We luckily only had to do that occasionally. The OP is kind of stuck with having to do that all the time.

I still think this is the best solution, short of driving a second vehicle. Even if you drove a second vehicle, you’d still have to take both, if you went sightseeing from the campground.
Don't think a topper is structurally sound in case of a rollover...

Funny how some of you guys will argue anything to the death!

If carrying kids in the back of a pickup is OK with y'all, then you might just as well tell the OP that his Dodge Ram 1500 is more than plenty for the load he is talking about!

Montana says every seat with a seat belt needs to be occupied and buckled but once you are past that capacity you can ride wherever in the vehicle unbuckled. (There is a rule for children to be buckled). We recently had a accident where a modified Jeep Wranger had a rollover with 8 people in it killing somebody and they are charging a drunk passenger with manslaughter for grabbing the wheel. How about 8 people don't ride down the interstate in a freaking Wrangler?

I have a 2015 F-150 XLT Supercrew Ecoboost with a console that converts to a front bench seat. Can seat six when necessary and love the way it pulled our travel trailer.

How in the heck do you get 8 people in a Wrangler? Did it have 6 doors?

I'm thinking that we've all scared the OP away from here.

Hope he doesn't go ahead and pull with that 1500...
