Black smoke from Silverado 3500 diesel
When I was in Alaska I saw black smoke coming out the tailpipe on my Silverado and I was told I may have brought some farmers diesel. Well today I got on truck some and more black smoke and I know I have not put any farmers diesel in truck. Now a little while ago I'm riding and get on the fuel and no black smoke. I'm confused, checked the computer and truck not throwing a code

Just a Regen Spock.
Get you a ScanGauge II. Program it to tell you when it's doing one, and how long it's been since one was done. You'll feel better knowing that's all it is.

Your diesel particular filter has either cracked or has totally failed. This is the symptom when they fail on other diesel engines that are equipped with the diesel particular filter. You need to have it replaced or delete the DPF and the surrounding emission components and buy a programmer. The DPF usually last between 100,000 to 150,000 miles and they are not serviceable.
Cheaper and better for the truck in the long run to delete.

When the DPF goes into regeneration to burn off the diesel particular particles there is not to be any black smoke visible from the tail pipe. As stated above the DPF has failed!

I'm more inclined to believe what you say. This happened in Alaska and I have driven at least 15,000 miles since then.

Wouldn't a failed DPF throw a code or two?

Should. And a ScanGauge will tell you what it is, and sometimes let you clear it.

No! There are no ECM sensor n the DPF. Remember the DPF can get as hot as 1450F or more during regeneration.

There are quite a few codes directly related to DPF operations.

There are sensors for the Differential Pressure Switch that monitors the backpressure on the DPF, but again no sensor in the actual DPF for the ECM.
If you would like to see a all most brand new DPF (19,000 miles) I can show you one. I locked up mine and put it away in the garage attic when they where being stolen for the metal in them.

Check your tail pipe if there is soot in the pipe than you have a DPF issue!
My wife's Jetta TDI has no soot at all in the tail pipe on her car, my truck on the other hand will have soot in the tail pipe.

Not arguing, this is not my forte'.
So you're saying a cracked DPF won't affect backpressure, which WOULD throw a code?
I don't know, some codes are surely tricky. But hard to imagine the DIC wouldn't light up if it were cracked/broken/malfunctioning.

It's cheaper to do a EGR and DPF delete than it is to replace the DPF. I had the delete package done to my 12 3500 Ram and she runs much better and fuel mileage is up. I do not have a programmer on my truck when I had the delete done I had a tow program installed and it made a big difference in the way the truck tows.

Along with your warranty, if it's a newer truck. Just saying.

The thing about codes...it can be the second sensor upstream that makes the seventh sensor downstream throw a code. Always a joy trying to diagnose those codes.

If I were you, spock, Id go to the following forum:
duramaxdieselforum.com
The knowledge base there is nothing short of astounding. there are men there with an encyclopedic knowledge of our trucks and will be happy to share with you.
I tend to agree with those who tell you the DPF may be bad but it could be other things too.
Good Luck!

1 Does my 2006 Chev Duramax 3500 have a DPF?
2 If so , how urgent to fix when it fails?
