My breakaway came with one of the nice steel carabiners shown in M&K Hoffman's reply above. After I replaced it twice because the pivot rusted I gave up and purchased a lightweight aluminum one from the camping gear area of WM. Unlike the very inexpensive ones, this one has a hook and locking bar. The amount of force it would take to break the aluminum carabiner is many many times the force needed to pull the breakaway out of its receptacle.
