Can I get a bigger gas tank? Should I?
I bought my truck used so I got what I got, but I wish it came with the bigger gas tank. Gas tank holds 34 gallons which sounded like a lot to this Civic owner, but when I'm towing I run out fast. Is there such a thing as a bigger gas tank that can be done as some sort of aftermarket upgrade? More importantly, would such a thing be safe? I don't generally like messing with things, and messing with my fuel system seems even scarier.
Truck is a 2017 F-250 gasser. Ford does apparently make a 48-gallon tank for these trucks, but it's not what I have.

Probably not a good idea. It's going to add a lot of weight to your truck that might mess up your towing numbers.
But my advice isn't based on any knowledge of what your towing or what the cost would be.

You must have a CCSB. The 48 gallon is for the long bed trucks.
TransferFlow in California is in the final phases of rolling out a 60 gallon replacement tank for the gasser Super Duty's.
See post #33 in the thread below for more details: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...r-dutys-3.html

Well, that's really interesting. Hmm. I will keep that in mind.
It's the medium bed. I didn't realize the bigger tank was only for the long bed.

Put a tank in the bed, next to cab.

OK so it seems that it is definitely possible to do this. What about the second question -- should I? Is it safe? Would I be in danger of violating my warranty? Has anyone here ever done it? If so, were you happy with it?

I feel your pain. I had an 06 Ford Gasser and got 7 MPG towing. It had a 26 gallon tank so 182 miles to empty. I assume your mileage is the same which means 238 miles to empty.

I don't think he can legally, because it is a gasser not a diesel. Gasoline is much more dangerous in a spill situation
Same reason they took the fuel tanks out from behind the seat in older pickup trucks, too dangerous,

Its not a bad idea at all..... $1500-2k and with the OP's numbers another 88lbs of fuel.
I would like a bigger tank for my 6.7L (38gal) but at that point the misses is ready to get out and stretch her legs.

I had a GMC 2500 CC (short bed). I replaced the OEM 26Gal tank with a Titan 52 Gal tank.....it was under the truck, still allowing me the limited use of my bed. It was a great mod.
When I traded that truck in for our current 2017 GMC 3500 Diesel Dually, my wife told the salesman we were only getting a 36 gal tank but giving him 52 gals.....this was the go ahead to add a 40 gal titan tank to the bed.....another great addition as now I have 76 gal.
Good Luck

Only problem I can see so far is all of these places have diesel tanks and nothing for the OP's gas truck

One other question. I don't know about other trucks, but the owner's manual in my Ford says not to remove the hitch, as the hitch is designed to protect the gas tank in the event of a rear collision. If I were to upgrade to a larger tank, would the hitch still protect it? I guess it must at least be possible, since the truck, at least in long bed, does come with a bigger tank. But OTOH now that I think about it, maybe in the case of a bigger tank, the bed length is necessary to protect the tank?
I am just wondering now why Ford wouldn't even provide the biggest gas tank as an option unless you get the long bed. Is it just not safe?

I also used Titan fuel tanks to replace my 26 gallon tank with a 43 gallon tank on my older Chevy. I've had it in there since 2012 without issue. I also have a 36 gallon in bed tank with an electric pump setup that I use to refill the built in tank. It's not a "transfer tank setup". No fuel stops during the day, and I can hunt cheap fuel without the fifth wheel when we are stopped. Lets me buy fuel at stations I wouldn't be able to get my whole rig in and out of. I am running diesel which would be a different consideration than you, running gasoline.

Titan and S&B both make tanks for the 2017+ Diesel Super Duty's. As far as I know, only Transferflow is working on the gasser version that replaces the factory tank in the factory location. They have had it in development since early last year and it will be CARB legal.
You don't need to remove the hitch. The fuel tanks in the SD's are under the bed, forward of the rear axle and between the frame rails so even though you have more gas with you, it's really not that much different than the 48 gallon on the long beds. Since its centrally located, it won't noticeably affect your balance and create a bunch of extra squat.

Fuel tanks
I agree with the TITIAN TANK replacement. I have short bed and put in 51 gallons.
Towing my 5th wheel this had a little to do with towing and extra weight.
This is best item I have added. Take pressure off.
Ps: I can now make it out of California to buy fuel for $1.50 less per gallon.

Transfer Flow has an excellent reputation. I have a friend that added one to his truck some 10 or 12 years ago. They've been in business a long time.

As mentioned, several companies make aux tanks that mount in the bed behind the cab. As also mentioned, with a full aux tank you'll be increasing the weight of the truck a lot, which may very well reduce your gas mileage substantially, and may put it over the CGVW limit when you are towing. Weight matters.

Does anyone read the OP? They are looking for a bigger tank for a gasser. Stop recommending diesel solutions.

X2 on the Transfer Flo replacement tank. They should have one that will work for gas as others have said. You CAN NOT legally put a gasoline tank in the bed.
