Can’t afford a new truck, maybe a new engine
I really can’t afford a new truck but should I need a new engine I was wondering what it would cost. I have 150,000 miles on this 2012 Silverado Duramax. I was just wondering what a new engine and transmission would cost. I hope to put another 150,000 miles on this engine but you never know.

At 150,000 i wouldn't even be considering it , unless you're having issues now or suspect you're going to . 187,xxx on my 6.0.gas and have no reason to think about it for another 100,xxx

I went through this dilemma with my 2011 F-250. Though it turned to reality. At only 78K, the engine dropped a valve and took cylinders with it. A new engine from Ford, installed and guaranteed for 36 months, was around 20K. A used engine, if I could find one with even close to decent low miles on it, was near 15K with installation, and whatever warranty the shop provides (6 months if you're lucky). The transmission was good, so I don't know about that cost. And I'm sure Chevy is not far off of these numbers. So in the end, I just sucked it up and got a new truck. All new everything, so I wouldn't have to worry about replacing the shocks, which were due, brakes, which were due, tires...they were good, batteries, etc. Hope this gives you a little insight anyway.

Well previous post you where all set to buy new camper so take that money buy new truck, Could forgo Alaska trip also to buy truck. Later RJD

Hi Spock123
Stuff breaks unexpectedly , you can’t dwell on issues that haven’t happened .
Keep your maintenance up, change fuel filters etc
These LMLs engines will treat you good especially deleted
Emissions are the issue as you know
150k miles your just breaking it in lol🤪

Our 06 Duramax has 200,000+ on it and I don't plan on any repairs like you question, that thing has a lot of life left, keep driving!

My buddies 2005 Chevy 2500HD Duramax has 350K miles on it, and still going strong. Only routine maintenance done to it, and it is used for construction.

$20K for a new engine in a 2011 F150? You can buy a complete 2011 F150 XLT with 50K miles for that price.

If it makes you feel any better, my '02 has over 415k miles and still going strong. No major repairs except 1 set of injectors (GM replaced) and the HPFP. My last tank I hand calculated 20.9 MPG. I change oil every 5-6k miles, no oil usage yet.
With that said, I think you are looking at a lot of happy miles with your duramax. But, I am looking at possibly upgrading to a new 2020, but have to see what the pricing will be.

I couldn’t pay for a new truck cash and I wouldn’t want a used one. I’m 73 and if I financed for six years I would be 80 when the truck was paid off or dead. I really don’t want a dually. I like GM, about the only change would be a crew cab, I have a extended cab now

We still own and use our 99 suburban gasser with almost 300000 on the engine and trans no work other then maintenance done to it so why worry with a big d and half thr mileage

I looked up the price for a new crate engine (complete) for my 7.3l Ford. $7500. Then I would have to install it. Lucky for me I have the tools, knowledge and equipment to do the swap. I could replace the motor on my truck 8 times and it would equal the price of a new $60,000 truck if I supplied the labor.
But don't let me stop you from buying a new truck. They are very nice and not everyone likes to work on cars or has the tools and know how. There is a lot to be said for having a nice new truck and warranty.

I work at a Gm dealership. A LML engine cost $7833.43 and a Allison 1000 costs $4080.00. Parts only.

You need to be pricing either emissions equipment or cost to delete and tune it. That's where you're far more likely to have issues. Other possible issue would be the HPFP grenading and taking out the entire fuel system. That usually runs $10-$12K.

The cost to delete the emissions on my Silverado diesel was $1300 bucks
