Canyon/Colorado diesel

Anyone towing with either?

We had a 99 diesel Super Duty and a 26’ Airstream, too big, too noisy, too truckish ... so we sold both and got a Canyon, then yesterday finalized the deal on an E-Pro 14FK. Silly trailer dealer wanted to add a weight distribution hitch. I laughed, said no thanks, and told him the weight ratings of a 2016 diesel Canyon.

Yup, see my sig. Towed with this combo for roughly 10,000 miles including over Colorado peaks, Idaho, Montana, most of the Midwest, New England, PA, NY (Adirondacks), usually cruise between 60-65MPH and get 12-15mpg doing it.


WDH not likely needed with that small of a trailer, but if you find that it porpoises or bottoms out over certain bumps on the freeway then a lighweight WDH will help improve the ride quality and prevent that from happening.


Just got back from ~3,500-mile road trip (not towing), from IL to AZ and back with some driving/sight-seeing while in AZ, and averaged 26-27mpg for the trip with the bed full of "stuff" (Suitcases, backpacks, gifts, tools, etc). Gotta love it!

I'd use a WD hitch but to each his own.

The OP's trailer has a GVWR of under 3,000LB. A WDH won't be safer unless it has built-in sway control. It won't take long for the OP to figure out if they're comfortable with the non-WDH setup or not.

I used to pull a 2800lb pop-up with a Grand Cherokee as well as a Yukon XL. The difference was noticeable between having one and not having one with both vehicles.

My hitch was a trunnion-style WD hitch which had built-in sway control.

I pulled my 13 ft trailer (2400 lbs) with my 2019 1500 and I barely felt it back there. No WDH needed or used. It towed and tracked just fine.

I do use a WDH with my 19 ft trailer, but I quickly realized that the sway bar was totally unnecessary, even in extremely windy conditions.

We have towed our a frame with my wife's canyon diesel. Great truck. Highly recommend it. We will see how it pulls our new RPod in a couple weeks.
