Curt A20 vs Patriot 18K

Just purchased a 2020 Sabre 36BHQ and need to purchase a hitch to pull it with. An independent shop recommended either the Curt A20 or the Patriot 18K and I'm looking for feedback on both to help make the decision.

Hope you get some replies as these were the same exact two hitches I was recommended at a shop.

I would look at a Reese 18k . I have had this for 3 fifth wheels. Full clamshell locking mechanism. Full binkley head. Grease it up and quite minimal chucking even on 16,500 lbs.

I can’t comment on comparing the two, but I got the Curt A20.
Very impressed with the quality, and like that with a simple removal of a large pin, the head comes out easily. The grease zerks are also a plus for maintainance.

How long have you been using it?

Hi Scoob,

Total disclaimer here, I installed it after I put my 5er into storage last fall, so I've not yet had the chance to work it.

I did a lot of research (Amazon has a lot of useful info) and decided on the A20.
I had a Curt Q16 before, and this looks like a much better design.

Use to have a Patriot 16K until we upgraded the camper and truck. Now we have the Companion 20k. They are easy to get in and out of the truck. Also never had any problems hitching up. They are made in America with a limited lifetime warranty. I had a small part break, called B&W and in a couple of days had the part in my hands. Excellent service. Had the Patriot for 6 years and the Companion for 2.

I have had the CURT 20 SLIDER for 6 years now and been a very good hitch for me. I have only used the slider twice just testing it out since I never had to use it yet. Have towed cross country with it and about 30000 miles towing with it and no problems!

Curt A20 vs Patriot 18 K

We went to the Curt/mopar when we got
Our 2018 ram after pulling with a patriot for 5 years & some 30000 mi. The Curt, in my opinion, is a POS. Hard to disconnect and sloppy ride. if I had the $$, I would go back to Patriot.

Another b&w recommendation. Had 2 b&w with a curt in between then. No comparison in quality and performance.

I have the Patriot 18K - Love it! It was easy to install and adjust the head height so the trailer is level. It is easy to take the head off and then pull the pins to remove the bottom half. Love the locking jaws. Only maintenance is to apply some lithium grease every now & then around the jaws and under the head.

Curt 5er hitches

Just for information, Kurt hitches are made in China.

Curt Q16

I have had the Curt Q16 for a year now and seems to work fine. Easy to hitch up and easy to lube. Only “complaint” I have is it seems to have a lot of slop when taking off from a stop. I think it’s pretty normal but still kinda worrisome..

I have owned and used both curt and b&w models you are asking about. The B&W is by far quieter and easier to remove if needed. It is a heavier hitch to lift out, but quality!

I have the 18k Patriot and love it. Have never used a Curt so can't compare but after seeing the B&W history abd knowing the quality of their products I am glad to have a B&W hitch.
