Diesel power train extended warranties

I知 looking at a 2015 Chevy with the Duramax/Allison. The truck has very low miles, but it has passed the 36-month warranty period. I知 a little fun shy of it, so I知 thinking an extended warranty might be worthwhile. My experience with them is that they池e worthless, but hoping someone has had better experiences. Any recommendations?

Just ask me! My Ford had a 100,000 mile drive train warranty. At 98,000 miles I bought an extended drive train ware for another 50,000 miles.
At 129,400 miles the Diesel engine blew up. Dead. For my $100.00 deductible Ford installed a brand new crate engine in it.
So, it can happen.
Your decision but I am sure glad I bought the extended warranty.

Was it a Ford warranty, or from a 3rd party that Ford sold? What company if not Ford?

It was a Ford warranty. Go to a Chevy dealer and inquire. It would surprise me if they did not have something similar. I had several options from full bumper to bumper to just the power train. I am sure they want your money.

I bought an Ally extended warranty on my 2014 Duramax as it was the first diesel I owned and I didn't want to get stuck with any big repair bills if something happened. So far I haven't used the warranty and it will be expired soon, was a waste of money in my case.

Mine served me well on my RAM. Shop time is $125/hr and my 8yr 125K mile policy was $2700. Truck went in 22 times over 4 years for sensors mostly. Paid for itself easy. It's kinda like a medical insurance policy. Most people don't need it. Otherwise the insurers would go broke. If you need it you will thank your stars. I don't believe the extended warranties for vehicles are in the same (low) league as the rv ones. My Chrysler warranty paid for everything and when I sold the truck I got a refund for the remaining time. I was stunned.

Diesel

My experience is the factory warranties are worth some value, as long as you keep excellent maint. records. Also, are you required to have work done at the dealer, or prove work was done with-in mileage limit or time period? Third party warranties are usually just profit makers for the seller. I worked in retail sales where I was graded for percentage of extended warranties sold. Increase profit margin. Talked to many unhappy customers when they tried to use warranty. Often, mfg. warranty repair work is is prioritized over 3 rd. party repair. I would not trust any 3rd party insurance on anything as expensive as a diesel motor. Curious if 100K factory drive train factory warranty carries over on used or if that ends @ 36 months.

Your truck is warranted for 3 years/36.000 miles bumper to bumper
Your truck and transmission is warranted for 5 year/100,000 miles whichever comes first. Some components relating to them are covered and some not. When reading through the Diesel Supplement book they can be confusing.
There is also an 8 yr/80,000 emission warranty. There is also a 7 yr/70,000 California emission warranty.

If you go the extended warranty route be careful from who you buy from and try to negotiate down. When I bought my new 2018 D/A a few months ago the finance person tried to sell me the extended warranty for $2400, I declined and then suggested buying at their cost for $1700. Again I declined. I have found that most of those warranties run along side existing warranties thus you pay for IE. 7 year/70,000 miles which begins on the day you purchase the new truck. As 5er_tom said, if you decid to buy, buy near the end of factory warranty so that it gives you the most value for your dollar.

Good Luck

We bought the Ally extended with our Ram Cummins. Although we still have the remainder of the 3/36,000 and the factory 100,000 powertrain, the Ally 7 year extended bumper to bumper was next to nothing in cost.

I say yes to Ford or gm not to 3rd party. But don't buy it until the last month of your factory warranty, if you buy a 5 year, at purchust, you will waist 3 years on it. I have bought 2 and each time it cost them more then what I paided for it, repair bills are just crazy now a days from dealer service centers.

Sounds like the best plan, buying Ford warranty at end of factory warranty.

Yes, this is what I learned, but make sure you buy it before the end of yours, if not you would have to pay extra for an inspection from the dealer, it cost me 150.00 for them to do it.

My (then) 2 year-old Ram's 5.7 Hemi blew at 96,000 miles... Although I was the 2nd owner & we were unable to obtain ANY maintenance records from the previous owner, including online records, Ram replaced the engine, no questions asked, under their 5 year/100K mile powertrain warranty. The replacement engine came with its own 3 year/30K mile warranty that went beyond the 100K...

I only paid $14K for the truck & will now likely keep it past 10 years/250K (frame) miles - since the new engine will only have 100K then... So, including routine maintenance, my annual cost of ownership will only be about $1500/year...

You got lucky, my 2007 f250 with 50,000 miles on it had to have the turbo replaced, they said I didn't drive it enough. Well anyway the cost for Ford to replace it was 2700.00, my extended warranty cost me 2300.00 I came out ahead, no matter what happens with diesels it cost an arm and a leg to repair. But like I said get the dealers not 3rd party. Even with that it took Ford forever to okay it, they said it was impossible for that low of miles, but when taken apart they found it rusted up. After the new one, they told me to drive it more, but it was just used as my TV. Great truck could pull a house even with the 6.0

Bought a 2011 F250 PSD used from a private dealer (i.e. not a Ford dealer) in 2016. Before purchase, I took it to the local Ford dealer for inspection. It passed and I was able to get a Ford 3 yr/36k bumper to bumper for just over $2,000.

I'm 2.5 yrs into the 3 yr extension and way below mileage limit. So far the warranty has saved me about $1,800 out of pocket. Not a break even (yet), but the small incremental cost is well worth it for my own piece of mind.

Ironic that this thread came up today as I was just on the phone with the dealership to see if I can further extend the warranty. I really like the truck but feel like I need the warranty for piece of mind.

For me, right now it's either go back to monthly payments (for the next 2-3 years) for a newer in-warranty truck, OR spend the equivalent of 3-4 months of payments on another extended warranty. Probably going to go with the additional warranty.

I found that Ford will extend it, wise move if you like the truck, it's hard for me to justify buying a new truck with the cost now a days, my first house didn't cost me as much as a new truck now a days.

Replying to a extended warranty thread is sometimes like jumping into a snake pit .

I would not bother with a bumper to bumper warranty but a powertrain warranty can give you peace of mind, just "double check make sure" the entire exhaust system is covered. However, if you're planning to delete don't waste your money on warranty.

The Ford dealer called this morning to tell me the engine install is complete. Not a bad deal. $106.50 total for the new 6.7 diesel crate engine from Ford.
Without the warranty my guess would be $15,000. Clearly, purchasing the extended warranty was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
