Dodge 2500/3500 transmissions

My Chevy 2500hd is getting long in the tooth. I'm going to replace it soon and am considering a Dodge as well as a Chevy. It`s the Dodge 6 speed automatic that I'm concerned about. Is it any good? I'm hearing mixed messages.

Yes, both the 68RFE and Aisin AS68RC are fine transmissions. Nothing like the older Dodge transmissions that were prone to overheating and failure.

As mentioned the newer Rams transmissions are so much better. I bought my first non GM truck this last go around and its a Ram and love it. GM is behind the times any more on looks and the same old interior as seen on there new 1500. Later RJD

I had an '08 2500 with the 68RFE and it was the best automatic I have ever had. Put 220,000 miles on it and zero problems.

Not sure where you are hearing the mixed messages.

I've heard nothing but good comments on the late model trans.

4X so far so good. I've got 58K on mine, not a bit of trouble.

I have a 2018 Ram 5500 and the Aisin transmission is great. It pulls a heavy load and shifts smoothly. A welcome change from older Dodge automatics. I bought a Dodge 2500 new in 2005 and got it with the 6 speed manual because Dodge autos were lousy at the time.

I do have a Dodge/Ram truck with the 6 Sped auto 68RFE in a 2008 Dodge with the 6.7L Cummins.

First off I know nothing about the gas engine transmission which is the A6-66RFE.

Now the two diesel engine transmission, the 68RFE and the AISIN which are both 6 speeds are slightly different. The 68RFE which was the first 6 Speed auto available with the 6.7L Cummins is a good transmission from the factory and can handle sight amounts of horsepower increases from the factory settings. Can this transmission fail, YES! How with excessive amounts of horsepower and torque going thru the unit. This is were you might have heard mix reviews on the 68RFE transmission.

The AISIN A6-AS69RC which is only offered on the 3500 series trucks is a medium duty truck transmission. What I have heard about this transmission is this, it is like the Energizer Bunny! It just keeps going you can't break it. But that is with stock horsepower and torque in the 3500 HO truck with 4:10 rear end and factory tires options.

Good Luck.

Just over 17k miles on our 2016 3500 DRW no problems so far. Recently had the shift solenoid recall completed and looking forward to many trouble free miles towing our RiverStone 5er.

6000 miles on my Aisin. When I got it the first too gears felt pretty slow surely for towing. But I won’t start seriously towing till next spring. But in that 6000 miles it has learned how I drive and now I like it a lot. Nice tranny. I hear it holds up well and it can take a lot lot more torque. Everyone says they’d like an Allison but this tranny seems fine.
