This bulletin reflects what I've read on every diesel forum, acceptable oil use is 1 quart for every 100 gallons of fuel. I think most of us use far less than that. And every diesel engine consumes some amount of oil, I don't care who makes it. Read your manual and manufacturer's bulletins.

The only time I notice any oil consumption is on a 1000+ mile trip while pulling the fiver. I don't use synthetic (didn't like the extra engine clatter we heard), so we change oil every 3000 while pulling, every 5000 if not.

Spock, get a K&N cleanable filter. I've had mine for about 8 years. I clean it about every 6 months or so, depending on use. Works out cheaper than replacing with OEM filters over the years. And it's a better filter all the way around.

Now you did it. Get those guys that swear a K&N ruined their engine! I have one on all 5 of my vehicles, two of which are cold air kits! They are full of you know what!

I have a 2006 Duramax with 137,xxx miles and noticed at my oil change interval around 8,000 miles it's a tad low on dipstick. Never concerned me.
Just got my last oil sample test back and engine oil is within specs at 8,000 miles and engine is healthy.

K&N burnt down my house, made my wife leave me, caused a 10 hour traffic jam, ruined the economy, raised gas prices. I could go on....
BTW...I've never tried one.

Actually that's is a very big no no wix filiter put out a bulletin not to tap an air filter in any type of manner, it can cause damage to the filter u able to be seen by the naked eye, if you want to try and clean use air at 5psi and blow from clean to dirty side.
K&N recomend to clean thier air filters every 50k or annually
I have to add approximately 1/2gal between oil changes every 10000 miles

Well I guess my Silverado is alright, I thought maybe something was wrong on the trip to Alaska. It's good to know everything is alright with the oil. Truck pulls camper great. I usually change the oil myself. Thanks to all

115,000 miles is nothing on a diesel engine and 1 quart of oil between changes is nothing to worry about. Give it clean air and monitor it for increased oil usage.

I get tired of reading that also. I've had one on my Cummins for 7 years. Clean it once or twice a year. I use the k&n cleaner/oil and do it exactly the way the directions say. Everytime I clean it, I wipe the intake tube with a white paper towel and look and my turbo impeller ....always spotless.

I've got 101,000 on my 2011 Ford 6.7. I use 5w40 synthetic. I base the oil change interval on the recommendation from Blackstone Labs. As of the last test report they recommended 6500. That could change but right now that's my oil change interval.
I send a sample to Blackstone each time I change oil. 80% of the hours on this engine are towing. It uses about 8-12oz between oil changes. I keep the level on the top line of the stick up to a time I get ready to change the oil. Blackstone asks for your oil consumption when you submit the test report. I use the Archoil additive. I'm not pushing it on anyone. Blackstone can see the Archoil additives in the oil sample.
I've never owned that particular engine but I've owned a couple of other trucks with diesel engines. Some use a little more oil than others. I see you have a lot of good advice from other Duramax owners.
I seriously doubt you have a problem. That's low mileage for a gas engine these days and really low for a diesel. Send a sample to Blackstone Labs. I am always impressed with the detail of their test reports. They keep track of the previous tests on your engine and look for trends that indicate something is going wrong.

I would not be afraid to buy a 'well cared for diesel' with 100K miles. In fact I did once and it was a great truck.

I wouldn't hesitate for a second to put one on any carbureted engine... They're a great filter...
Problem I have is I possibly will be one of those guys who will over oil the filter and end up with a gummed up MAF.... so it's a dry filter for any FI engine for me.

What climate are you primarily driving in with 5w40 year round?
I'm gathering by the slight consumption your oil sample doesn't have any fuel dilution?
If my memory is correct and I don't know about Fords but that era of Duramax's (LMM) didn't have a ninth injector when it regen'd so there was some dilution. Because of that Amsoil recommended changing the oil sooner than their specs said???

Not over oiling is the key. More is not better. Just enough to evenly coat. 75k w/ k&n (150k total) on a turbo diesel engine and not one indication that oil has made it past the filter.

On my 05 5.9 cummins, I change oil at 10k. I have never added oil between changes but I do use about a qt or 2 between changes comparing what I drain to what I add.

The problem with the K&N filter is people over oil them and its ruins the MAF sensor . Sometimes a simple cleaning will fix the sensor sometimes it needs to be replaced . Also a K&N lets a lot of dirt through . I run a AC Delco for that simple reason . On off road stuff like my Toyota I love my K&N's but never in my super sophisticated Diesel engine . If you look at the latest CAI systems most of them use a dry filter now .
