Dually Conversion
Has anybody done a conversion on a 3/4 ton to a dual wheel with fenders or know of anybody that has? I saw an advertisement for this in Trailer Life and was curious.

The only way I would do this so that IMO it is worth the effort is to stick a 1 ton dually axle and springs under the truck.

Depending on the year of your truck you might be able to buy a similar model year "donor" dually pickup and just swap the axle, springs, wheels, and bed etc. for less $.

My truck is 2006 GMC 2500HD. I have air bags and tow 34CKTS just fine but wondered about dual wheels for additional stability. My truck is paid for and don't want to buy a new one.

No one is suggesting you buy a new truck.
Have you looked to see what the whole axle assembly would cost versus a kit?

Mtelkman, No I haven't as of yet looked into swapping rear ends and accessories seriously. I just know that several years back it was not uncommon to occasionally see a 3/4 ton truck with dually wheels. I saw the advertisement in Trailer Life magazine and was curious as to whether or not it would be feasible. As I stated earlier, my TV does a good job hauling my 5er and if or when it becomes necessary to replace it then I may go to a medium duty truck for hauling my mobile condo across the country. Thanks for the suggestions.

I thought about doing the same thing with my low mileage '01 F250. After number crunching it was cheaper to buy a donor and do the swap myself. I looked at the published towing/capacity numbers of the F350 from my year and the benefit did not outweigh the cost. It would be a fun project though.

Back in the mid 90`s I seen a ford ranger converted in to a dually. Guess it was to haul more groceries. About all they were good for.

There wouldn't be much benefit in replacing the entire axle. They are both 11.5AAM rearends with 3.73 gears. It really wouldn't take much to do. Just trying to find a bed. You're 2500HD is an 8' bed right?

Hi the dully wheels are a real trip in the winter snow. The truck has way to much tire in the back for its weight. In snow the rear end floats on top of the snow and dose not sink in to get a good bit. This makes the truck very hard to drive in the snow or if there is a lot of water on the road it will hydroplane. With the tt on the back it is very stable and you don't get blown around much.

So what is your plan for a bed? You won't be able to modify a factory dually bed for your WB. I'm thinking your only option would be a flat bed.

The advertisement was for Arrowcraft. Their website shows a fender conversion for a short bed
