Engine light, code P0406...

...just recently popped up on my dash. So, this is what it means...

https://www.fixdapp.com/blog/p0406-code

Even though there is quite a list of symptoms, I cannot notice any difference in driving or performance.

But, the general consensus is to just replace the EGR valve and you're good to go, in most cases.

I popped my hood to locate the EGR valve only to discover that the PO had removed it, even though it is a gasser.

So, since there is no EGR, or EGR valve sensor on the truck, what makes this code even appear? And what can be done to remedy this?

Rich

The ECM ( engine control module) is looking for the component!

Yes, some event triggered the ECM and the component was MIA so, it flashed the CEL and code!

Was a programmer used to fool the ECM if so, you might need to reload the program or just lean to live with the code stored in the ECM!

Good point...I don't know if a programmer was used. I will ask the PO about that.

Thank you.

Engine light, code P0406... did you clear codes when you had it scanned, sometimes a glitch will turn them on. I had a similar code a month ago on daughters suv we cleared the code and it has not come back.

Try pulling your negative battery cable. Leave it off for about 30 minutes or so. Then put it back on. This should clear the memory of all codes.

If it reappears it is a current fault and not in the history. You will have to find the cause then.

Gentleman, Please read his first post. The truck has had the EGR valve removed 15 years ago! Now all of a sudden the CEL and the engine code has been illuminated and registered on his dash.
If this was removed and a tuner/programmer was used to disable the ECM from looking for the component with the ECM is now looking for this component. Your advice will not work!

NEW INFORMATION...!!!

I just called the original owner, who I would have sworn would have removed the EGR system.

He said that he never removed it.

There's a block off plate where the valve is supposed to be.

Could it be possible that some Ram 2500 HD's didn't come with one??

I'm gonna dig into this one....

I found some info on this on a Dodge Ram forum. Below, are some copied replies from the forum...also, in the pic that is posted, that's exactly how mine looks...NO EGR, just a block off plate.

Original poster asks..

"im getting a code P0403 and P0406 says EGR valve, easy fix right? (arent they all). Only I go to dig into it and well no EGR valve.. I can't find information or videos showing a second type of EGR set up? can anyone assist?"

Some answers...

"Like HemiLonestar said, no egr valves on early 3rd gens. Very weird that your getting those codes. Hmm."

"Only the 03 and the HD's, starting with 04 half tons they got EGR."

So...I never had an EGR!

What does he risk, 5 minutes work at best, and 30 minutes of wait time?
