We were really hoping to be at our camp site around 4pm this past Thursday. DW took the day off of work; I had to work until noon. Once I got home, we finished packing and were on our way by about 1:15pm.
We go to a large parking lot close to home to hook up the Liberty. But in a relatively short time we were on our way.
Not quite sure what prompted me to think about it, but I started wondering if I had done everything with the Liberty; transfer case in neutral, transmission back in park, steering wheel unlocked. So, I pull into a parking lot by a volunteer fire company about 15 miles from our town. After all, the Liberty pulled okay, but I like things to be "proper". I found I had left the transmission in neutral, so I started from scratch - transfer case back in 2wd, tranny in park. Then put tranny in neutral, pull the transfer case lever back to 4Lo then try to put it in neutral. I put the transmission park.... but I noticed my indicator in the dash said I was still in 4Lo. Reached for the transfer case lever and it moved very freely. Oh, crap! Fired up the tablet and did a quick search on one of the Jeep forums and found that the cable had probably snapped. Called my son, who was gracious enough to come out and is the real Jeep gear head in the family - Yep, Dad, you're screwed.
So, after a call to GEICO road service, the Liberty was towed back to town, at no expense to me, and my son took the DW back home, where she picked up the Renegade and then followed me up to Raystown Lake. Finally made it sometime around 6:30pm.
Moral of the story - check and double check to make sure things are right the FIRST time. And have some great road service!
