Exhaust Brake On/Off/Auto/Full?

How do you set your exhaust brake when just driving vs towing .... options are off or auto or full .... clearly on in the mountains .... Thanks

Don't have a "Full". Not sure what that is.

Exhaust brake always ON when towing. So is Tow-Haul Mode.

on my 2018 Ram 3500, I run it on full when I am able to get some open road. In traffic running it on full is kinda jerky because I have the manual transmission. So If Im gonna be in stoplight traffic for a bit I have it on Auto so it only comes on when touching the brakes.
I have Off/On(full)/Auto

Full comes on anytime I release the gas, Auto only works by applying the brakes.

Hmm. On mine (F350) the option is on, or off. I’ve gotten to the point of turning it on whether towing or not.

I run with EB on full all the time. With all the stop and go traffic in town, I run with tow/haul as well. Open road I turn it off. And of course, when pulling the trailer it's in tow/haul.

Ram forum chatter seems to suggest the EB also helps engine warm up.

It's also in the manual. I can confirm it helps significantly at very low temps - it gives the engine a (small) load.

And I prefer using full exhaust brake.

X2.. Big help on cold days. I go out, start it, put EB on, after afew seconds it goes into fast idle. I have the manual tranny so if its really cold, I also put transfer case in Neutral and put tranny in gear and let out clutch and get the fluid moving and warmed a lil also.. helps solve the cold notchy shifting a lil.

For Non-RAM users the exhaust brakes on these trucks (RAM), I believe operate differently than Ford and GM.

When I was at the TDR rally for the new 2013.5, 6.7L Cummins that was introduced that year. The exhaust braking was explained to us there. I am going by memory from 2013 so, if I get something wrong don't flame me to bad.

“The new exhaust braking feature will be a two-stage exhaust brake instead of the single stage as on the earlier 6.7L engines 2007.5 to 2102 trucks. The smart exhaust brake feature (Ram’s name) will have a full mode to slow the truck/trailer fully. The next stage is a lighter application mode to maintain the set speed with the cruise control.” Either will work but the full mode will be harsher if you do not have a trailer attached.

This should all be explained on how to operate in the O/M guide for your year of truck. I know my exhaust brake was explained in my O/M manual for my year of truck!

Auto. Only use full as a sort of "Force it on" situation, or under high-traffic, stop-and-go situations.

I use auto for the most part. It switches to full with tow/haul turned on.
