If you make the not recommended decision to do this anyways, you should take steps to lighten the trailer and maximize your truck's cargo capacity.

1. Put NOTHING in the trailer (not even propane tanks) except for a small battery just big enough to activate your trailer brakes in an emergency.

2. Travel alone and remove anything from the truck that isn't absolutely necessary.

3. Go slow. Take your time and try to avoid crossing mountains or other steep grades.

4. Make sure you install a decent brake controller. Most 1/2 ton trucks that I've seen don't come with one built in like the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks do.

If this is just one trip, perhaps hire someone with a proper tow vehicle to do it for you. There are lots of guys that tow RVs and mobile homes, and they have the proper equipment to do it safely.

Towing

No way, not worth taking the chance. Think of "Tail wagging the Dog" and not enough brakes.

The truck should have enough brakes for it and trailer enough brakes for itself.

Toghether there should be plenty of brakes.

Personally I'd hitch up trailer and head for a scale. There's bern much talk of " fictional weights" and scale will tell the tale.

I've towed large trailers with trucks many claimed it couldn't be done. If all weights are within published limits after scale weighing, and there is adequate tongue weight, I personally would do it. Plan on traveling slow and avoid heavy traffic.

Just like others have said, strip all unnecessary weight.

I'll never drive through Houston or Dallas ever again, with or without a trailer.

Towing

I think many of us have pulled trucks, trailers and tractors over the weight limits. I like to think I have gotten older and wiser. Well, older anyway. LOL
Not sure how you "strip weight" out of a trailer. I tried weighing my wife every time when she brought more "Stuff" into the trailer. Explains why I was pulling a 8k TT w/ a F-350 diesel.

Towing

I thought Dallas was bad, until we towed our 38' 5er through Atlanta and Chicago. Both at 5 pm. on rainy Friday evenings. Never again, ever!

Before the Forester, my TT was 29' bumper to bumper. I towed with a 1500 that had a towing package. Could feel every semi push and fighting heavy wind. I can't imagine towing 40'. Would never even try with a half ton. Made me a believer if to tow again a person needs the correct size truck.

You are right at the official limit on everything. The length is probably the worst, although I don't think Ford has a spec on that.

You can probably safely pull that in low wind at 50 mph, probably.

I wouldn't do it.

F-150 Towing a 40.5' trailer

The length is the bigger issue here. Even with the weight of the trailer minimized, you have a 40 foot sail that will want to drag that truck all over the place. I have an F150 with the 3.5 towing a 32 foot trailer and would not drive it if the the winds were over 15 mph because it was barely under control, even at speeds around 50 mph.

I did go to a Pro Pride hitch and that eliminated the sway and allowed us to travel in higher winds. I don't think that would be enough to mitigate the problem with a 40 foot trailer though.

Beg borrow buy or steal a bigger truck. Sounds like you know better but are grasping for some of us to reinforce you in trying it.

Don't.

Nor sure in your state, but in a safety check,. YOU KNOW, THE THING THEY DO RIGHT AFTER THE FATAL CRASH, you will be illegal because they will. Look less at actual weight and more at max gross ratings. Pretty sure you'd be straight up illegal in California

AND BY THE WAY, there is probably nothing 1/2,3/4 or 1ton that could make me tow that much flying box at 65 miles an hour. Nothing could control the leverage it will have against you in an Emergency stop or swerve.

Please be careful out there.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. If you do decide to do it, let us know when you are leaving so we can stay of the roads and we can watch the news.

I would not have a problem with it just remember wind from trucks will make you sway a bit. Some will say you cant do it and some of them are the ones who cant back into a camping site. Its so funny watching some of the snow birds back in here in florida wife is talking on a cell phone trying to tell hubby how to do it and 20 min. later they are still at it
