F150... 2.7 or not
Hey guys
Meeting with a ford dealer soon. My gmc Yukon xl is getting older, costing to much in repairs and just didn't tow great so going to a pick up. Not truly a ford guy but have a connection for good pricing. Also sick of used trucks and working towards leasing new. Anyways to the question
I have to watch my budget so it's more about what I need than what I want. I want the 3.5 eb with crew cab, but a 2.7 eb double cab looks a lot more like my budget. Gonna price both but have to make sure the 2.7 will work.
I'm towing a 25ft hybrid, dry weight is 4500 so I'll estimate high at 6k loaded. Base 2.7 I think was rated 7500 towing, get different gearing and add payload package and that goes up but so does price. Base payload seemed one for my gear and crew, 2 adults, 4 small kids, a few bikes and toys it the bed.
I think the 2.7 base with out options would do it but not sure how happy I'd be.
Thoughts? I'm sure I forgot to mention something so just ask for other details and I'll give it.
update: i go about 10 trips in the summer, most trips are 1-2 hours one way and mostly in the Adirondacks so i do hit some hills. My traveling to camp style, hilly or flat highway, is slow and steady but i do want to feel comfortable and not over work the engine. Although in a lease i guess i dont have to worry about that as much

I've read somewhere that you want to give yourself a 20% buffer from the max tow so looks like you will be on the edge of the supposed buffer.

That being said, I wouldn't want to tow what is a 20% buffer from my max tow number.

I know you said you don't want used but you can buy a 1-2 year old and get what you want for the same budget. You will still get the balance of the factory warranty. Let somebody else take the hit. Take your time and look around. Sometimes people trade to downsize.
My brother in law just traded his less than 2 year old Sierra for a Buick Enclave due to his wife having difficulty climbing in and out of the truck.
It sounds like you are trying to talk yourself out of something you most likely will not be happy with. Go with your gut

I personally think it will be fine..Big IF however is, maybe 2 years down the road you decide you want more Camper, you may need to upgrade truck.
As someone who personally bought a 1/2 ton ford and then upgraded to a 3/4 ton After towing with it a few times.. It does Happen.
I had the 3.5 ecoboost in a cc 4x4 setup, and it pulled like a monster..
Find one a year or 2 old for the price of that new 2.7 probably as others have said.
The lil 2.7 is supposed to be impressive, I havent driven one but i REALLY liked my 3.5!
Who would have though there would be a day when we would be discussing a 2.7 6 cyl in a full size pickup towing 7K pounds..

thanks for the comments.... I did think about the camper upgrade point. My current unit is a 2015 with TONS of sleeping room for all the kids. my plan is to have this another 4 years which is when i feel some of my kids will stop going all the time. so a 3 year lease on the truck should work for the current camper plans.
the trouble with getting a used one is budget, I could be wrong but believe i will be a lower payment with the lease versus loan on a used one. I am not only looking at monthly payment but that is part of the budgeting process.

Payments may be close but you will not build any equity in a lease. Keep it for 4 or 5 years and you will be way ahead of the game with equity to use for a future lease if that is your realistic goal down the road.

2.7
I have a 2.7 and pull a 30 ft TT with a weight of about 6000 loaded. I live in westerm Co. And travel the passes and have no trouble . It pulls the trailer just as fast as you would like. I also have a 3.5 witch is great but the 2.7 gets much better mileage. You won't be unhappy with the 2.7.

Depending on where you are going in ADK you want the 8cyl. Pulling through the Cascades outsider of Lake Placid would be tough with a 6cyl. My opinion.
My Chevy Avalanche had a tough time with our hybrid. I upgraded to a 2500HD for my new trailer which is a bit heavier.

Agreed... I don't buy new vehicles anymore. Buy used and, if you can stomach it, sell your Yukon privately. You'll sit on it a little longer but you'll get a lot more money for it.

We are typically in the old forge area or speculator, the 5.3 in my yukon (dont know the gears) would make it up but either real slow or high RPM. had to get it revved up a little before the hill to down shift

Do you go there via Utica? If so not too bad. From Indian Lake could be tough.
We camp at Rollins Pond every August.
