Fifth wheel tonneau cover experiences and recommendations.

Truck:2021 Ram Laramie Sport 3500 6.7L. regular bed w/mopar pin box.

We haven't bought a fifth wheel yet. Still looking to trade up from our 2017 Rockwood 2906ws once it sells.

Can't decide between a roll up cover ($ but they don't seem very theft proof) and a retractable($$$).

The 21 Ram is not the long bed (too late we already bought it), so we don't want to pick a cover that could get damaged from a tight turn. We have a lot of camera's on the truck (all the RV options from the factory) and don't want to block the view of the bed.

Amazon reviews are good but I need some recommendations from the field.

Two seniors who just love RVing, thanks!

I have had roll ups and they are a PITA! I currently Have a vinyl trifold and have been happy with it. I did have one incident where the bottom of the 5th wheel made contact with it in a deep dip in the grass. The metal roll ups with provide the best protection however it does take 8 to 10" of bed space.

I have the Extang tri fold hard cover and a toolbox on my long bed. I have to remove the cover as it will not let the pinbox secure to the hitch as it is in the way. Guessing it would be fine if not for the toolbox. If I had it to do all over again I would have waited and saved up the extra money and went with the metal roll up hard cover type.

You're going to get answers all over the place.
I have a Roll-n-Lock retractable and love it. Aluminum slats covered in vinyl. Very strong.

The roll-up canister takes up minimal room. I can still get a dozen or more sheets of sheetrock or plywood under it. It can be used open, closed, or at 3 stops in-between (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 open) while driving.
There is even a youtube video showing how to add a stop just before a 5th wheel hitch. Nice thing about that is you can have the fiver hitched up and still have the front half of the truck bed covered up - out of sight and out of mind and protected from the weather. Oh, and when open it does not restrict your rear view like a folded up tri-fold.

Moved thread from the Forum Administration/News/Member Accounts section to the Towing and Tow Vehicles sub-forum since the OP's questions are specific to Tow Vehicles and have nothing to do with the Forum Administration/New/Member Accounts section.

I've always had long beds. So I know this will not help.

Had two velcro roll up covers (never again)

For the last 10 years have had a tri fold and have liked it may buy another if needed. Has not interfered with our fifth wheel view and keeps part of the bed covered. Do remove it ( takes about 2 minutes max) when pull BILs gooseneck cattle trailer.

Where do you live? Will you need to deal with ice and snow? Just something else to take into thoughts.

I have a roll-up. Never been an issue for me…

I have the BakFlip M4. I had a similar one on my previous truck. It has 4 fold panels. I fold back the first three when towing, and have never had any issue with the pin box and the cover. As I've gotten older though, it has gotten very heavy flipping all those panels. But it does great.

As mentioned, you'll get lots of opinions as to what works for them. My $.02... Truxedo Deuce. Rolls up to not block view of hitch and flips back for access to tool box when covered.

I have a BAK revolver 4xs hard tonneau. I love it. Very secure. No clearance issues.

I have a 5 section back flip (8’ box) and it works great. It even provides a little roof for rain protection at the front of my box for my generator and wood if I take them. I can’t see the hitch when hooking up but I’ve got pretty good at it over the years.

X2 on Roll-n-Lock.

Plus my hitch sits just low enough that I can completely close the cover and lock up stuff when unhitched.

Two of my neighbors with 5ers have "TRUXEDO" covers. They seem to work fine for them.

I have a Retrac pro roll up, but i don't think I would have bought one of it didn't come with the truck due to price. Another thing to consider is using a gooseneck hitch like Gen Y. Saves a lot of room in the bed and you might be able to close a tonneau cover further with it vs. a fifth wheel hitch.

Last year I installed a retractable bed cover by Bestwyll on my 2022 Superduty w6' 8" bed and Pull rite swivel hitch. The cover is great and sits just high enough to clear the hitch and not have to remove it. Only thing I recommend is to measure and make sure the cover will clear the hitch if you intend to leave it in the bed.

Bed cover

I had a 2017 2021 and 2022 Ram ,all Crew Cab, all 6’4” beds. I have used the same bed cover on all of these. Bak-Flip solid powder coated metal , Quad fold. I have towed 3 different 5th W’s and never had a problem. I have taken the trucks up to NYC and didn’t have any issues.
