Flat towing

Ball Park, what should I spend to have a flat towing system hooked up to my Class C RV that will tow a jeep Cherokee, base plate included?

What about the price of a braking system for your Jeep....or are you taking the chance and towing without one?

Go to etrailer.com You can prices for everything that you need. Then do it yourself or ask your local mechanic about labor.

My costs.

I bought a Jeep Wrangler that already had tow base plate and taillight connection installed.

I bought tow bar, about $1000, got nice lighted expensive one but came with safety cables and wires with unit.

RVI tow brake controller around $1200, wanted easy set up.

did have to buy base plate to tow bar brackets $150. Not with the Jeep.

did install work myself $0. Mostly Break away device.

Jeeps do not require much expense to flat tow vs other vehicles.

Or, you can get a combined tow bar/braking system. Uses surge brakes like those on boat trailers and is significantly cheaper than a tow bar and electronic braking system.

READY BRUTE

The base plate install can be a little daunting on the Cherokee as the entire front end has to be removed, but it is doable.

When we purchased our 2010 Jayco Melbourne in 2016 I had the dealer where we purchased the motorhome set up our Jeep Wrangler.
Dempco Commander tow hitch and baseplate, RVI brake unit, wiring - $2,700.

Here's the quote I went with for my GMC Acadia Denali (baseplates) and motorhime.last fall The whole front end fascia has to come off on the car.

People have been shocked at what I paid. You can save 30% or more on parts if you buy them on etrailer, etc

I let my rv dealer do the whole thingClick image for larger version

I don't know about the Jeep, but I did the labor myself and set up a Ford Fiesta for flat towing for around $2000. The auxiliary brake system was the single most expensive part.

The right answer is...it depends - on what types, configurations, makes/models, options, etc. But, for a ballpark figure - for a tow bar, baseplate, braking system, wiring harnesses, and labor - figure around $4,000.

Here's the approximate breakdown of costs for the system I use:

Blue Ox Avail tow bar - $900
Blue Ox baseplate for Jeep - $500
OEM Jeep wiring harness - $150
SMI Stay-N-Play braking system - $1,050
Miscellaneous connectors/hardware - $150
Total (for parts only): $2,750

And, if you can't or won't do the installation yourself, you can add another $1,000 - $2,000 in labor/installation costs.
