Ford Eco Boost 2.7L

I am looking to buy a new truck. I currently have a 2012 Tacoma 4.0L which pulls my 4600# TT well. But, I don't know what it will do in the mountains. I am looking at the 3.5 EcoBoost, which is cited as being a great puller and the torque stats are good. I asked how this can beat the 5.0 V8 and was told because of the twin turbos. I am sold on it, but I have seen guys say the 2.7L EcoBoost was good also?
Experiences/Thoughts?

I have a 3.5 ecoboost and bought mine after doing a lot of research. Watch some comparison testing videos on youtube and you will understand why. If you drive in any high elevation a non turbo engine can not even compare. Watch the videos on towing up the IKE Gauntlet.

I also have a 2013 F150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost. 420 lb-ft of torque at 2500 RPM puts it in small diesel territory. No experience with the 2.7L though.

No experience with the 2.7 but my 3.5 handled our TT with comfort and ease for four years!

The 2.7 just a 3/4 3.5. Up until the new Raptor 3.5 It was more updated than the 3.5. It's fine, it will put the 4.0 Toyota to shame power wise. Are any of these going to be legendary for relialibility? I doubt it, but IMO that status takes at least 10 years of daily use to obtain if not 20.
The 3.5 in my brother's aluminum truck is a rocket but I have heard the GM 6.2 with the 8 speed is a little quicker. Both feel more like muscle cars than pickups. A 2.7 won't be as good but pretty normal feeling except it should get a little better mpg. Power takes fuel no matter how you make it.

I tow a Vlite 30wikss (7700 lbs dry, 8500 lbs most of the time) with my 2016 F150 4x4 SC with 3:55 rear end/Propride 3P 1400 hitch. Tows like no tomorrow....

I have a Salem CruiseLite 241QXBL (4100lbs dry) that I tow using my 2017 2.7L F-150 SuperCab 4x4. The truck does pretty good, but I don't have much basis of comparison since this is my first full size truck and first trailer. I definitely know the trailer is back there when I'm towing, but she gets the job done. I've been really gentle on the throttle and take it very easy.

What did Ford do about condensation collecting in the intercooler which eventually was forced into the engine causing it to grenade?

I believe the 2.7L EB gets up to around 8500 lbs max tow rating. As long as you don't get another camper (?), that should pull your 4600 lbs camper just about anywhere (as long as that's the loaded weight). If 4600 is your empty/dry weight, you're probably closer to 5600 loaded. Still OK with the 2.7L, but you'd feel it more in serious hills.

If you might get another camper in the next 5 years, I'd get the 3.5L EB.

10000 fifth wheel

Just crossed the continental divide three times pulling my 10k (empty weight )
fifth wheel (definitely not empty)with my 2013 3.5 EB supercrew with max tow package. I have almost 120k miles and made The trip from Phoenix Az through Colorado and back home. It was not happy on the steep grades but got us up and down. This truck is a pulling machine. There were friends who doubted that a six cylinder could do this kind of trip. They don't doubt it anymore. Total trip 5k miles

For that weight TT I'd go with the 5.0. Less problems to deal with and will yank that TT like it's not even there.

How was the fuel mileage when towing your set-up?

That was the reason I upgraded from my F150 Ecoboost to a F350 diesel. I didn't like working the engine so hard and not even be able to keep up with traffic while towing my lightweight 5th wheel on steep mountain passes. My 6.7L doesn't even know I have a 5th wheel back there even on the Ike Gauntlet...nothing like being in the left lane and passing all of the normally aspirated folks.

A friend of mine a 2013 F150 3.5 ecoboost and pulls an 8500 lb camper back and forth to Ohio from Indiana 3-4 times per year. He said it pulls the camper pretty well, he did add air bags to his suspension to help out. He said the only difficulty he has is the trailer can wag the truck in higher winds or a passing semi truck. So I would think a 3.5 would work very well for you as long as your not going to buy a heavier trailer of course.

Ford Eco Boost 2.7L V-6

I bought a new 2015 Ford F-150 SuperCab, 3.55 axle, with the 2.7 Eco Boost engine in 2016 to pull my new 2016 Rockwood Roo 21SS. The Roo weighs 4880 per the CAT Scales, loaded for camping. I'm very happy with the 2.7! Around town I get around 19 mpg and on the road not towing 22 mpg. When I tow the Roo I get around 10 mpg and keep the speed around 63 to 65 mph. Any faster and the mpg goes down!
Pulled the Roo to Florida this past spring and was not sure what it would do on I-75 south of Chattanooga, TN over the mountains. It pulled the Roo up and over the mountains there with ease! It shifted between 4th and 5th gears but never had a problem. These were not the Rockies, but I don't think they would be any problem.
It has 325 HP @ 5,750 rpm and 375 ft lbs of torque @ 3,000 rpm. You step on the gas and it goes!!!
If I had to buy another truck right now, I would get the 3.5 Ecoboost with the 10 speed trans. I think it would pull anything that I would want to pull with ease and still get great mpg!!!
