Ford f350 6.7 Liter Diesel

I am still looking to buy my tow vechicle. I have heard many horror stories regarding the Ford 3.0 & 3.4 diesel engines. One of the one I am considering now has a Ford 6.7 Liter Engine. Any input (good or bad) about this motor would be grately appreciated.

3.0 and 3.4 are Transit engines maybe in the new F150. Only problem I read about is all the junk they put on them for emissions. DEF and EGR seam to be the biggest. May be others.

I was a big fan of my 6.7 great tow vehicle, but now it is at the Ford dealer with a blown engine after only 130,000 miles. Do yet have specifics on failure. Heading to the dealer now.

Ford is already on the 3rd revision of their 6.7L engine to improve power and reliability. They have a lot riding on this engine.

I'd like to know why previous poster's 1st generation 6.7L failed at such low mileage. I've heard dropping exhaust valves, turbo failure, radiator failure, and glow plug failure could be issues for 1st gen year models.

My '15 F350 is a love hate relationship. DPF problems not resolved until 17k miles mainly because dealerships thought my problems were from city driving and not enough highway driving even though 99% of my driving is towing my 5th wheel on the highway. Had 3 camping trips shortened or cancelled bcause of emission issues over the past 2 years. Shortly after DPF issue resolved to Ford's satisfaction, had cooling fan failure. Affter that had DEF pump failure not covered under warranty. A month later at 21k miles, had a TPMS fail. In 2.5 years of ownership, this thing has been more in the shop than my Hyundai which had only a quick recall check ;-)

FWIW, I still feel that my '15 engine generates too much soot when towing a 5th wheel at high altitude. Engine does not do passive regeneration when towing my fiver above 6k feet altitude but does passively regenerate when towing at much lower altitudes, i.e. Texas. I think the engine ECU calibration is not properly calibrated/tuned for high altitude operation resulting in too frequent DPF regenerations and somewhat regular incomplete regenerations where DPF soot reduction is not what it should be. Last regen took DPF down to 75% and one prior to that took it down to 95%.

Not sure if it is a consideration for you, but I can tell you they are a LOT faster than my Cummins. At least as far as seat of the pants acceleration unloaded goes anyway.

I think the original poster was referring to the previous 6.0 and 6.4 liter diesel engines as having problems, and the 3.0 and 3.4 were just typos.

I also would like to know what failed at 130,000 miles. I have a 2003 Ford F350 dually with the dreaded 6.0 diesel engine. I bought it knowing about it's poor reputation, because it was half the price due to the 6.0's reputation. I talked to a lot of diesel mechanics and they said if you are religious on doing the proper maintenance and run them hard, then it is a great engine. I bought it with 77,000 miles and I have put 30,000 miles on it and it has been great...so far... I do all the maintenance religiously and do a coolant flush yearly (a very involved process...) and I am crossing my fingers.
So why am I discussing a 6.0 on a 6.7 post??
I hear that all diesel's need to have maintenance done well and on time or they will have issues.
I like the Ford body chassis and suspension best between Ford, GM and Dodge. I think Dodge has the best engine in the Cummings, GM has the best transmission in the Allison and Ford has the best body, chassis and suspension. Please let's not start an argument on this... It is just what I have learned in my research. I hear that all of the newer diesels are good now. I like the Ford's... Other's like the other 2. I find that most tout what they have as the best... and that is great!

What I know so far is there are metal flakes in the oil, compression in four of the cylinders is very low, and the engine is now frozen. Luckily I spent $2500 on an extended warranty so I am only in to it for $100. Dealer says 5 weeks or more to replace the engine as the warranty folks want to be involved at every step. I am purchasing a new 2018 F350 with another 6.7 diesel.
The dealer in NC where I purchased the truck was stunned that the engine died at 129,400 miles.

My 2017 F350 will be 2 years old this Sept. Love the truck, it does proper regens and is a towing machine. Would not trade for anything else. No issues.

I’ve got a 6.0 and as long as you drive it Correctly and maintain it correctly they are good engines.

One of the issues with the Ford 6.7 is the Bosch CP4 fuel pump. They have an annoying habit of "grenading" internally. GM has the same issue witht he same pump in their 2011-2016 Duramax 6.6 (LML version).

When the pump goes it throws metal shards throughout the fuel system causing a destruction of the injectors, fuel lines, common rails and even the fuel tank (via the fuel return lines)

Ford, will inspect and if the find the tinyist hint of rust will blame the problem on "bad fuel" and will deny even warranty claims. GM, has thus far honored the warranty claims for the same pump failures.

There is a partial solution. Exergy makes a Fuel Pressure Regulator Valve that costs about $300 plus installation. It will not stop the CP4 from grenading, but it will contain the metal shards protecting the rest of the fuel system, lowering the repair cost to around $2000 down from in excess of $10,000.

The symptoms of a CP4 failure are DEF warnings in the DIC and finally the engine just dies and will not restart.

On my 2nd 6.7 in the '16 F350. I'd not trade for any 2 GM or Ram. 140,000 care free miles on the 1st. Over 61, 000 on this one!

I was towing along about 65 mph on a 4 hilly lane. Had just crested a hill perhaps 1/2 miles over the top and without any warning metallic sounds from under the hood. Not loud, not solid metal banging. No indications on any gauge, no red lights, and normal display for temps. I pulled over and cut it off. I started it for perhaps 5 seconds and it sounded horrible, ran very rough, then died. That was the end of that engine. Truck was always serviced at a Ford dealer and always within time and mileage limits. Also filters have been replaced on schedule.
