If Ford still made a 7.3, I'd buy one. Let's face it, they have all had their successes and failures! Ford with the 6.0, Ram with the weak power train and GM with injector problems and not to forget the pump rub on the transfer case. I think all the manufacturers have learned from these and think you would get a solid truck from any of the three. I am in the market for a new one ton and had planned on driving GM and Ram. Maybe I'll consider Ford too. For me it's all about comfort and durability.

You keep your rust bucket Ford, I'll keep my old Chevy. Fords are ditch fill around here.

Never once has it quit and had to be towed. The only parts Ive changed on the 7.3 are the glow plugs (2 years ago).It has the original transmission as well.I do all my own maintenence on all my wehicles. It has had the front rotors changed out and several sets of brake pads.I know full well that this is not fully representative of the brand and before it was ever driven on the road it recieved a ziebart,I took it home, drilled 1" drain holes where I thought it neede them, then took it back and had the whole truck ziebarted again. It has never had any body or paint work doe except changeing out the frot bumper that had an encounter with a turkey at 70mph. I am very anal about service andboth the 7.3 ,the trans, and both axles were drained and refilled with Amsoil at around 100 miles. At 5000 miles I started usein a pint of moly additive in the oil, each change.I do not do extended oil change intervals, usually 5 -6 k for oil and filter. The trans was chainged at around 100000 and since the filter looked brand new and there was no black "scum"film in the bottom of the pan,I have not done it since.I buff it and wax it once a year and most of the time (in winter) it is parked in my heated shop when not in use. So lets hear it from all you GM and Chryser guys to see how yours compair.

The Navistar 7.3 was bullet proof and on a par with the Cummins for performance, longevity and reliability but smoother and quieter. Ford almost committed suicide with the 6.0 and many 6.7 owners spent thousands on aftermarket upgrades to prevent it from grenading.
If Ford had stayed with Navistar, it would still be the best diesel pickup truck on the road. JMO

The problem with the 7.3 was that it was too dirty for a light truck and by the time they hung enough emmision controls on it to clean it up,it couldn compete in the towing market. In the last generation(2000 2001.5) It had no emission controls and barely made enough power to compete.I fixed that a while ago,but a mfg couldnt do that.

Be Safe in your GM until you can get the seat belts fixed, This does not look good. These look like Foreign built (Mexico) GM trucks using off shore made parts.

Maybe the seat belt issue is the reason the crash dummy did not do well in crash test.

Maybe they thought they would go back to the days when GM was on top when they didn't have seat belts in vehicles and you were not legally made to use them. Lol

Looks like Ford has made a habit of it.

I guess people vote with their dollars on which truck is number one. I bet Ford is laughing all the way to the bank.

But it was this last year 2015.

Quote:
A crash test of Ford’s new all-aluminum, F-150 extended cab model didn’t turn out well, according to results published by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety.
When the truck hit a 5-foot rigid barrier at 40 miles-per-hour — a setup meant to imitate a partial head-on collision — it crunched the front driver area to a point that “seriously compromised the driver’s survival space,” IIHS said.
The poor results were specific to the extended cab version only. The better-selling F-150 crew cab received a top safety pick award from the insurer-funded group after the same tests showed the smaller cab better preserved survival space for the driver. Ford said it plans to update all its 2016 models with the extra steel to help deflect energy in the event of a crash.
Quote:
“Ford added structural elements to the crew cab’s front frame to earn a good small overlap rating and a top safety pick award but didn’t do the same for the extended cab,” said David Zuby, IIHS chief research officer. “That shortchanges buyers who might pick the extended cab thinking it offers the same protection in this type of crash as the crew cab. It doesn’t.”
Glad to see it was corrected But if not for this type of testing Ford would have done nothing to correct and that goes for ALL manufactures.

Navistar designed and produced the 6.0 and 6.4. That's why Ford broke away and developed the 6.7 without them.

My brother has a 2005 Suburban 2500 and loves it with 296,000 miles. Every summer since 2011 it has been in the body shop to clean up rust. This year the white bumpers that have been painted twice will be replaced with chrome. He lives in NW PA and believes the brine and salt on the winter roads kill his Chevy every year. He is just happy the frame has not needed anything as that is scrap time.
