Worrying about fuel mileage while towing is a fool’s errand. There are waaaay too many real world variables. For example, you must pass a big rig while going up a 10% grade...there go al your mpg calculations out the window. Or your wife says I’m tired and need to be home now! and you high tail it without a care to mpgs. If you can’t afford the hobby, pick another one.

2017 Dodge 3500 dully diesel pulling a 35 foot toy hauler, very heavy. 12 MPG up hill, down hill, flat or windy. No trailer, 17 mpg.

That is the beauty of the Diesel, it performs better while using less fuel and as you say, cost aside.
