When talking Diesel, larger pipes probably do add HP if engine is tuned for it.
On Gas Engines w/o turbo/super chargers larger pipes usually harm low end torque for slight gains in total HP at upper end of RPM range.

A larger exhaust system could increase power if properly tuned. However in most of these pix, the exhaust is smaller sized and only the tip is larger. No value for power or mileage. The smallest pipe diameter dictates flow at a given set of circumstances.

we get to roll coal at work once a month, unless the power goes out. yes, the exhaust is big enough for a basketball to not get stuck in, no im not going to stick my head in it. this thing would make a pretty nice motor for a motorhome though, if you could get it to fit.
apparently i dont know how to film things and filmed sideways.

We call them kiddy exhaust being in engineering this is a noise thing wanting sound like a semi. My nephew has this on his truck like someone said it does nothing but make noise unless you spent big bucks for the tuner kit.

In PA the diesels and gas trucks over a certain size are exempt from the emissions test (plug I to the obd2 port and check the sensors). But they cannot modify / delete the emissions. But a station will often look the other way. But if caught the vehicle fraud troopers revoke their inspections license which is not common but will happen.
As for the tuner trucks, we have a half dozen violations to cite them with when they are too loud or rolling coal.

In Colorado, along the Front Range, all diesel vehicles except "farm and collector" vehicles of any size are inspected. Five minutes after the test, all the stuff comes off and the tuner is turned up.
There are some laws, but the police and patrol seldom enforce them.

The worst are actually mounted on small cars with itty bitty engines. Sounds like they're traveling 100 mph or more and when you actually see them they're straining to maintain freeway speed.

On diesel engines the tailpipe collar is open at both ends. It acts as an extractor when moving as the air passes through the collar and provides modest vacuum to pull exhaust gas from the tailpipe and provide modest power improvement. It also helps cool the exhaust and prevent scoarched paint and burns. Came standard on my Chevy Duramax. Not sure if bigger is better but leave that to the aftermarket.

Has no affect on emissions.
