Go Big Exhaust

Here is an interesting exhaust system well actually it looks like an extension on the muffler...I think it's on a diesel but not sure.....Truck was spotted in PA on a recent non-camping trip......That has to add atleast a few more HP right ? Going to need a big tater to stick in that tailpipe

Around here, it’s a typical “Neck” add on.

The big tips do absolutely nothing to increase hp. It's strictly a "size compensation thing". I'm quite sure it's a tuner diesel, and if you see it driving, it will be a "rolling coal" truck. The driver will let you know that.

Is that window sticker referring to the exhaust tip?

Totally agree. A larger diameter (within reason) pipe along with a lower restriction muffler will increase power, but those tips are gaudy, unnecessary, and do nothing for performance. They're a megaphone and nothing more.

In PA diesel's aren't exempt from emissions...Can your diesel still pass if you are "Rolling Coal" ? Here in NC it's a fairly common to sight diesels that are deleted and or rolling coal since they are exempt from emissions testing.

Any vehicle on the road is subject to federal emissions laws. Anyone who bypasses or deletes emissions equipment is subject to heavy fines. This is almost never enforced.

Most rolling coal diesels have adjustable tuning. They just turn it off a few days before inspection, and then back on as they leave the inspection station.

The only satisfaction that I have is the fact that all of the extra fuel will "toast" the motor, and hopefully the tranny in a short period of time, and maybe daddy won't spring for the 7-12K driveline repair.

Frequently the subject engine is the 6.0L which is inherently weak and problematic when left stock.

Extras fuel in itself will not damage the engine. Too high of boost and egt is the killer. Happen to remember the 80's 6.2 GM diesel? The originator of stock coal rolling.

But they did that right out of the factory door, just like the old 5.7L. The big difference is that the 6.2 & 6.5L usually got past the warranty period, unlike the 5.7L which seldom got past the dealership driveway.

Actually the extra fuel does contribute to failure. It washes the cylinders down. The washing is amplified by the higher compression/boost. It washes the cylinder lubrication off causing liner and piston scoring along with ring damage. This in turn increases the blowby wash. Then the "wash fuel" goes down the cylinders and washes the lubricant from the main and rod bearings. Then is goes boom, and grinds itself into beer cans. Yahooooooo!! A good outcome in my mind.

Head stuck in exhaust pipe? Just start the engine. Soon enough there'd be enough pressure to pop it right out.

When talking Diesel, larger pipes probably do add HP if engine is tuned for it.

On Gas Engines w/o turbo/super chargers larger pipes usually harm low end torque for slight gains in total HP at upper end of RPM range.
