And this is on a Ram 1500?!? Wow, I would think a Mega Cab would have even lower payload. How is this possible? Did they used to have higher payloads 10-15 years ago?

Wow, that is crazy! Then I guess I'd have to say to the OP, if you can find a used 1500 with that kind of payload, go for it! Otherwise, you are probably going to have to find a 3/4 to get that type of payload now.

Your only regret going with a bigger truck is all the new friends you'll have...
with stuff to move.

As "the guy" with the pickup for many years, I know this situation well!

I'm amazed at all the help your getting. The weight range you are talking about is within the range of well equiped 1/2 tons. Some are better, like the F-150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost, it will tow 12,500 lbs vs a F-250 with a 6.2 V8 at 15,000 lbs. Tongue weight with a weight distributing hitch doesn't come into play, that's what WDH's do distribute the toung weight between the trailer axles and the truck axles of the hitch. Others talk about brakes, you should have electric brakes on the trailer that will stop you faster than the truck alone. If your going to a rig over 12,000 lbs get a 3/4 ton diesel, a gas won't get it. My F-150 with 3.5 EcoBoost pulled much better than the 2004 F-25 gas I had in all respects.

It's never the weight of the trailer that's the issue. You run out of payload well before you get anywhere near the towing capacity.

In the decades of owning/driving pickups I've NEVER encountered such.
The word "NO" makes it clear

I am no expert on this so I am sure others who have towed more will comment on this, but it is my understanding that WDH's distribute the weight evenly between the front and rear axles of the truck, but do not take away the actual tongue weight. If you have 800 pounds of tongue weight, it will still be 800 pounds of weight on the tongue whether you have a WDH or not. In fact, it will be closer to 900 pounds since a WDH weighs close to 100 pounds.

If you are buying a new truck and trailer definitely go with a 5th wheel. Much easier and safer to tow. I would go with 3/4 ton at a minimum and a 1 ton is not much more in cost. A diesel should be reconsidered.

Winnebago make a nice full size 5th wheel that can be pulled by a 1/2 ton. It only has a pin weight of 825lbs.
