Help deciphering tow guide/TT specs??

Currently own a TT, but thinking of getting a Crusader 355BHQ and a new TV. When I read the 5th wheel specs, it says a "hitch weight" of 1817lbs. When I look at the Ford 2013 Tow guide, it lists a "Max Tongue Weight" of 1400 lbs for the F-250. Am I comparing apples to apples? Or does the max "hitch weight" exceed the recommendations for an F-250?

I just need to get my facts straight before I tell my wife I "need" a dually F-350......gulp!

Thanks in advance!

Tongue weight is for travel trailers. On a fifth wheel, the hitch weight or pin weight goes in the bed. There, you have to see how much carrying capacity your truck has. Remember, the numbers in the book tend to go up when you load, so that 1817lbs could be more like 2100 when you are camp ready.

Remember, when you figure out how much pin weight your truck can handle, don't forget other passengers, pets, tools, firewood, generators, etc etc.

So with a Fifth wheel, because of the location of the kingpin, you're only concern is making sure you stay within your "total weights"?

For example, the F-250 has a max loaded trailer weight of 16,300 lbs with a GCWR of 23,500 lbs. The Crusader 355BHQ lists a Base Weight of 11,736 lbs. Toss in another 2000#'s for "stuff", and you should still be way good?

The 250 and 350 will have thee same pulling capacity but the 350 will have a higher pin weight . the diferance is a 2'' spring block on the 250 and a 3.75 '' in the 350 plus a over weight leaf. just put on some air bags and have fun .

As above tongue weight & pin or hitch weight are two dirrerent things...... LOL You are comparing apples to oranges.......... Hitch or pin weight for a fifth wheel weight & cargo adds in to the gross carrying weight of the truck. Tougue weight is what the can be at the bumper "receiver" hitch. It gets confusing...................

There are a lot of posts on this forum on towing weights and calculating correctly. Here is one of those threads.
