I have the Equalizer WDH and use their lube, High Performance Lubricant. Using it has made a considerable difference in announcing our arrival at CGs (little or no metal on metal noises that wake up the dead) and more importantly NO difference in the handling the sway of the TT. I wipe it off after each trip before putting it away. I'm sure the other lubricants/greases mentioned earlier in the thread would do as good a job.

We can't find one around here to fit. Found one online for a buck, but the shipping was $5. Doesn't make sense.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cheap!!

When I fertilize my lawn I save a piece of the bag because it's extra thick
plastic. Cut a square about 8 or 9 inches. Hold it centered over the ball
and fold down the sides. Secure with a rubber band.
If you want to get real fancy you can cut off the corners and make
it stop sign shape.

Also potting soil comes in heavy bags.

I used to use a folded up WalMart bag (still do in a pinch)
but the square of heavy plastic bag works better.

It keeps the grease on the ball and off me and keeps dust or road
grit off when I'm running around with the hitch on there but no trailer.

When I'm towing I can fold the plastic and put on the rubber band to
keep it greasy side in and just toss it in my front storage hatch.

Cozy's are for keeping the beer cold!

Apparently, I am too.

I cut up old jeans, and put a piece over the ball, overlap it, then secure with a short bungee cord. The legs of the jeans I put over the spring bars and lay them across the trailer tongue.

Oh yeah, I keep using the same jeans parts.....they are just greasy on the inside.

Once again, this forum has opened my eyes to new ideas. Who would think a simple thing like this could start such a discussion. Being from the submarine force and seeing the benefits of proper and improper lubrication, I will stick to using grease (pun intended). Although I am a mechanic, I'm glad I found this forum and am able to have open discussions with others more versed in the art of RVing than myself.

If they are the same as a grease less ball joint or tie rod end I don't want one.

CW sells it online for a couple of dollars but you will need to wait for the "free shipping" periods otherwise you'll be in the same boat.

It's almost impossible to get it on without some type of lubrication. I used to remove the hitch when not towing but it's too heavy for me to lift so now I keep it in. Within of a week of leaving it in place the ball started showing signs of rusting so I got the cover.

I have seen at least two that wore through

For your coupler, jacks and bunks on boat trailers, it’s also largely a matter of inspection. Check your coupler for proper function. Be sure the coupler latch moves the collar that locks under the hitch ball. Also, look up into the coupler to inspect wear. Though it is rare, hitch balls have actually worn through the top of the coupler, so it’s a good idea to grease inside the coupler so the ball has some lubrication. Shoot some penetrating lubricant, such as Prolong or WD-40, into the moving parts.

I have seen at least two that wore through
and had to be replaced
but should be noted
these were on trailers used every work day
over many years

Don't know how far your hitch sticks out and what your rules are there but be careful about leaving your hitch in.I met a guy at a campground who said he was sued by a woman who hurt her leg on the hitch he left on his truck. She apparently was walking by not paying attention and banged into it,he apparently didn't take the necessary precautions to prevent it.

I just clean mine and re grease it when it is time to hook up. This gives the added benefit of something to grab on to when pull the hitch outport he receiver.

My buddy sprays Amsoil 5th wheel ball lube on his goosneck hitch but I've never heard of anyone doing anything with a trailer ball before. Most people I see keep the hitch in the receiver full time. Personally, I can't see the ball seizing to the coupler on a trailer and don't care if the ball gets scratched and shows rust. I do periodically check to make sure it's tight though.

Seriously?!? That's just crazy to me that he would actually be sued but I guess that's also why we have insurance.

That's what he told me.Apparently it was more his fault to have the hitch sticking out than it was the ladies fault for not paying attention.Guess people just have to be baby sitters for everyone else.
