Hitch/ball wear

Hi,

We just picked up our 2018 26RR and after unhooking it we noticed a wear mark on ball. We pulled it about 30 miles and it made this gouge. We are supposed to be leaving next week for a month long trip out west and are very concerned about this. The dealer hooked up everything.
Thanks for any input.

Looks normal to me. Metal to metal. If it worries you put a little grease on it.

That is a sign of not applying grease to the ball before hooking up.You should clean the ball and make sure there is not any dirt on it before greasing. You can also get small pebbles under the hitch if you frequently travel gravel roads. You may be able to use a file to clean up sharp edges to the gouge. Any time you have metal on metal turning or sliding you should apply a layer of grease.

Blackrock, that is not normal wear. That could also be from too loose of a coupler or connecting a 2-5/16 inch coupler to a 2 inch ball. Both the ball and coupler should have the sizes stamped into them.

it is a 2 5/16 ball, it is also on a slight angle down on receiver, if that makes any sense. I would think it should be straight, not angled downward.

feel around inside coupler for any rough edges. Use wheel bearing grease on both sides.

Most WDH's there should be a slight angle towards the rear, that's part of the adjustment to get the trailer to tow properly.

The angle should be away from the rear of the tow vehicle and towards the front of the trailer. I've never seen the ball angle towards the TV.

The down angle is towards the rv, is that the way it is supposed to be? I guess I'm not quite understanding what you mean. It angles down towards the front at the hitch

The top of the ball should be angled towards the trailer, the attached PDF file will help you understand.

Not commenting on the angle of the ball, but that wear pattern is definately NOT normal for a short distance tow. Something is definately off in the coupler. I have hitch balls that have pulled for thousands of miles that don't show that sort of groove forming. I'd check the sizing as already suggested and be sure that there isn't something bent or broken in the coupler.

Just seeing this.... no one asked so far that I saw but you said the trailer was just picked up. That hitch looks very old and used. Did you already have it from another trailer or did the dealer give that to you.
I’m asking because I wonder if that wear wasn’t already on it.
