Hitch Help Needed

I'm looking to take my family on a long trip from Michigan to the mountains in Colorado with my 2019 Salem Villa Estate. I'm towing with a 2.7L EcoBoost F150 and a chain/sway controller hitch. I was wondering if I should upgrade my hitch before I go to maybe a Hensley or Propride just for safety purposes?

You don’t need hitch advice — you need truck advice. You can’t pull that destination trailer with that truck.

you need a trailer to take traveling . not that model. you will be screwed in colorado just driving around . mountains will kill that truck and as for a non rv park you are in a rv park. rent a condo , vrbo in colorado, you dont even know what you are getting in to. and reservations a must and dont expect to just pull in a,,, there is a rv spot. you will be at a !!! O DRIVING SOMEWHERE" Like to Kansas ..

I know, I was going to get a Ram but they are just so expensive so I bought the Ford instead. Seems to tow fine but since we are going cross-country, I was curious if the hitch would help. Thanks for your reply.

What model 2019 Salem Vista Estate do you have ? The least heavy of those that I could find on the web weighed in at 9,234 lbs. I pull a TT with my 2011 F150 3.7L eco boost and I would want anything any bigger to have to pull. After it’s loaded up with all that we need, it’s even heavier.

If your Salem is smaller and lighter, please tell us what you have. That helps a lot with the question you’re asking.

I have never seen one of those things moved into a campground with anything less than an F-450, and that was only once. Every other time was a much larger truck.

It's a 395RET. Yeah I put airbags on my suspension so now my payload is 5000#. The truck struggles a bit when it comes to hills but that 2 7L eco revs them turbos and she rolls like a champ. I'm not concerned about the truck. Just asking about the hitch.

Sorry this must be a joke post.
Towing a 40ft+ destination trailer with a fictional dry weight of 11,357lbs and fictional dry tongue weight of 1,468lbs, with a 2.7 Ecoboost F150 is just insane.

To answer your hitch weight question, YES, it easily exceeds the max hitch weight.
And you're completely incorrect about airbags increasing your payload. They don't, they only help with sag.

This is why your post is so unbelievable.

For those reading, here are the trailer's specs:

The guy at the truck store that sold me the bags told me it increases my payload to 5000#. Is that not correct?

To the original poster (if you are sincere in your request for help)

Please reconsider your vehicle of choice for your tow vehicle. Your RV is too big to pull with what you have. A picture comes to mind…

air bags do not add to payload . your truck is too small or your camper is too big either way stay home . We don't need anymore crazy drivers in Colorado then we all ready have . if you feel for your safety and that of your family stay put and enjoy your own state . Book and room at a hotel or lodge and just drive out . So i do have to ask most 3/4 ton trucks range anywhere between 2800 to 3400 lbs of payload you think the rear end on your puny 150 is anywhere close to a 3/4 ton? now think about it air bags do not give you 5000 payload which would be more then most dulleys ... a propride will not help only a bigger truck

I've never seen anyone pull a destination trailer around like a regular trailer. They are meant to be parked as a seasonal.

Few other things to put in the calculation, transmission is going to get real hot because the truck is not geared to pull that much. The brakes are too small for that much weight pushing (yes I know the trailer has brakes) but things happen. Then the liabilities if, and hope your not, but if you are in an accident the insurance has a way out of paying a claim because you exceeded the published capabilities of your truck.

I know the truck can move the trailer, but you have to consider hills, wind, etc when driving cross county.

We all wish you the best just don’t want you to risk your equipment and more importantly you family.

Good luck

With all due respect, a 2021 Ford F-150 with the Max Tow Package has a rear end comparable to a 3/4 ton truck. The list of enhancements to safely tow within the vehicle's tow ratings are also built into the package. Included but not limited to; Frame, receiver, driveshaft, spring package, wheels and tires, and brakes. Engine choices and gear ratios are also limited.

Personally I would not conventional tow a 14K 40ft box behind anything less than a MDT.

Exactly. I guess I should have been more specific. Every time I have seen one of these things being towed into a campground, it was being towed by a professional with a very heavy truck. I have never seen one being towed by its owner.
