Ah. I wouldn't think 5 minutes or less is excessive, especially if it is cold. If it was warm, then it probably borders on excessive. I don't think any modern engine requires the warm up that engines did 50 years ago. I think most folks just do it out of habit, not necessity. When we happen to get a slot by someone like you described, I just think they are still working and I can cut them a little slack.
I'm also deaf in one ear, which is very handy at times. I just put the good ear in the pillow and no more noise of any kind

Ditto! If it weren't for the vibration and hearing wife groan, I don't think I would have noticed, lol. BTW, it was only in the low 50's

I understand!
In the 50s he should of just started it and idled out. But you are already awake from him starting it anyway.
And since you are both awake already, there are other things to do you know, like make coffee.....

Hahaha, that's actually good ol' Jim Leahy (RIP), Trailer Park Supervisor at Sunnyvale Trailer Park in Nova Scotia. If you have Netflix, tune into Trailer Park Boys, no matter how crappy things are going in your life, you will feel better about yourself! (greatest thing to come out of Canada since poutine, btw, and maybe chicken chips, which I'm dying to try)

If the windows are not frosty, the idling is not required. If they are, idle while scraping them off.

Signed, lifetime diesel owner.

Letting a modern diesel idle is actually bad for the engine. If the engine has been run hard and hot, it needs about 5 minutes to idle to cool down to prevent turbo troubles. In the morning, the time it takes to buckle your seat belt is enough warm up before driving.

After 25 years of edgers, string trimmers , blowers, hedge trimmers and mowers all day and yes I wore ear protection ... I have to say I might just be happy to hear the truck idling

Hmm, doing some research it looks like Ford might have made a F-950 many years ago. Further research and I found they still make a F-750 with upwards of 31,000 pound towing capacity for the same price or cheaper than 250's and 350's. Maybe that is the way to go. Can never be too safe. Always better to error on too much than too little.

I will show myself out.

Sounds like the guy had an older diesel. Most modern ones are very quiet. Either that and/or they guy had a heavily modified truck and enjoys rolling coal on a Friday night.

Hahaha! The truck looked pretty new, like I said, I just made that model number up because it sounded as ridiculous as his truck, which had a tail pipe I could probably stick my whole leg into.

Trivial stuff here. My Grandfather used to have a saying:

"Some people would complain about the sun coming up in the morning if they were up that early to see it"

My 6.0 with the Flowmaster 44 is louder than most smoker motors.

I idle mine until piston slap stops. About 5-10 min.

If I'm next to you I pre-apologize.

Yeah....I had to fish one of my grandkids out of one of those tailpipes once.

Maybe RV parks and campgrounds will start having separate diesel and gas loops to keep us apart!

That way they can keep the fighting down...

I like this thread...

Is it possible Ford MD trucks may have a real diesel engine.. Cat or Cummins or something?

The loudest LD trucks I remember hearing are the "looser" 7.3L IHC motors. They have a distinct noise.... maybe it's the V-8 part of it. The 12V and early 24V Cummins are very loud.... think trash truck. Honestly I think they sound wonderful.. but I am surely the exception.

I have a newish 5.9 24V "plastic diesel" as I call them an it's pretty quiet to me. I hardly ever warm more than a few seconds, but I back down the drive and put put about a mile through my neighborhood. It's ready when I get to the highway.

That's funny, and not far from the truth! Some good friends of ours own and operate an RV park in Ruidoso NM. During the horse racing season they are booked solid by seasonals. They really try to keep all the older RVers separate from younger or middle aged. Helps keep the peace. I think they used the term grumpy old codgers vs young whipper snappers

Idle Time

I have a newer Ram 1500 diesel, let it idle until oil temp hits 70 degrees which is at most 3 minutes or so. If I drive off with colder oil temp sounds like the bottom end is going to come apart.

If I had someone at a campground ask me to not let it idle due to the noise I would let it idle off but no stepping on the fuel pedal.

my cummins truck is loud, straight piped and tuned.

That being said, I try to be courteous, I do my best to arrive during daylight and wouldn't start truck up until after 8am. On the rare occasion I would arrive late, pull in, park, and deal with getting level in the morning.
