I lost my truck for xmas and now all I want is to go camping.

Hi all, Unfortunately my '09 Dodge 2500 was totaled recently due to a reckless teenager (NOT MY OWN) and I am now in the market for a new to me truck. I'm struggling a little in what I'm looking for as I want to meet / exceed my needs but also not kill the wallet. I currently have the following camper:

2021 FR Vibe 26RK
Dry Weight: 6350lbs
Tongue Weight: 790#
Max Weight: 7800#

I'm really considering a Ram 1500 with the V8 which claims to pull 12000+ lbs / 2500lbs payload capacity. Just curious if anyone is pulling with similar and how they do?

I would love to see where Ram claims a payload capacity of 2500lbs, for their 1500 trucks. They have always had the lowest payload capacities, of the Big 3.

Well I wouldn’t make these numbers up, hence the inquiry. According to the website the new 1500 has a max towing of 12750lbs and max payload of 2300lbs.
I attached the a clip and admittedly I was off by 200 lbs in my original post

The max payload could be 2300 lbs. If it's a custom ordered 2 door, 8 ft bed, without options..
Best way to find out is look at the payload stickers on a few trucks at the dealership. Most will be way less then 1800 lbs.

These numbers don't add up. At least not to the published specs of the trailer which shows the trailer weighing a ton more.

Empty weight: 6684
+ Payload capacity: 2884
= Max weight: 9568

Regardless even with a heavy 15% tongue weight, call it 1500 pounds for ease of calculation, the proposed truck seems capable with either set of numbers.

Right. It’s best to ignore any MAX numbers on any manufacturer’s website/brochures. Max Payload/Max Towing, etc. That’s their marketing way of saying “It’s actually possible for us to build a unicorn vehicle that meets these specs but it won’t be true for what you want/need.”

As 1100Mike indicated, it would be hard to find a truck for sale that actually had the Manufacture advertised towing weights. The only true towing capacities is going to come from the truck's 'as built' door sticker.

Here are the 'Advertised' specs for my current 2019 F150 and the 'Actual' Payload specs from the door sticker.

That is a big difference (Advertised - Actual = #1460) in those numbers and my F150 is just an XLT trim level w/o a lot of accessories.

Go look at door jam stickers on actual trucks for actual payload numbers.

1500lbs is over the tongue limit for any 150/1500 series truck.

I imagine that if my 2018 quad cab tradesmen with the V6 has basically a 1900 pound payload that Ram has found a way to add more payload to a new truck even if it has a 5.7 . Ram has a vin number look up that can provide payload and towing for that truck. Go online find truck you like find the window sticker then go to website with the vin from window sticker

Let me be the first to say it plainly...that is too much trailer for a half ton Ram.

Thank you for the reply’s. I kinda figured a half-ton was a bit short specked for my needs but wanted thoughts on the Dodge 1500 based on the companies info. Likely I will pair with a 250/2500 of something but damn, new trucks, and even used trucks, are not cheap these days.

I’m sure it’ll tow that much, just not up a hill, 😂 lol.

As others have said, the 2300lbs number would be for a 2 door 2WD base model with no options. You would be hard pressed to find one.
Website/brochure numbers are as useless for trucks, as they are for RVs. There are so many variations of trucks, such numbers are rarely accurate.

Oh hell, just buy a 3500 dually and get it over with. You just know you're going to upsize anyway.

I'm KIDDING.

Seriously, my best towing experiences have been with a long bed crew cab, 2500 series. Gas or diesel doesn't matter, that's your call. We had a 2021 1500 High Country Crew Cab 3.0 diesel and pulled a 21FBRS twice......... before Ian's storm surge ruined it and the truck. Damn. It did ok.... Anyway, we now have a 2019 Silverado 2500 Duramax to replace it. And paid top dollar for it. That's the way the used truck market is, at least here in SW Florida. Ford. GM. Ram. I see trucks as Chocolate. Vanilla. Strawberry. Whatever flavor you like. Buy as much truck as you can comfortably afford. My .02 from hurricane central in SW Florida.

Best line I've seen today.

As someone else said earlier - get the most truck you can; but it's going to be expensive. Oh and it probably won't be sitting on the lot waiting for you to show up. My daughter ordered a Chevy 2500 about 6 months ago and it still hasn't shown up. Just sayin'

As someone who went from a 3/4 ton to a more than capable 1/2 I will gladly tell you that you will be disappointed with the towing experience. The 1/2 had plenty of power and excellent brakes. The down side was being exhausted by the time I reached my destination. The trip would often be a double fist white knuckle drive. Please don’t make the mistake I did. As others have said buy as much truck as you can afford.

That trailer has almost 3,000lbs payload. Will you ever load it that heavy? Most seem to be about 1k payload. Unless this is a toy hauler and you have a heavy toy I would not use the trailer gross in this case.

Depending on what and who is in or on the truck you may be ok with a properly equipped half ton

DO NOT "under truck" yourself. Even the manufacturers are uncouth! Their specs are for a PERFECT WORLD...we do not live there. At least a 3/4 ton, but it's your (and your families) life!

Sorry to hear about your truck, glad you’re ok. I always get tickled by the posts that throw out the 150/1500 question on a towing forum. Until you finally bite the bullet and get enough truck versus just trying to get by as light as you can you won’t understand why you need as much truck as you can afford, and if you cannot afford enough truck you need to downsize your trailer. All it will take to convince you is an emergency. I’ve learned 1/2 tons are for groceries. Can you get by with less truck than you need and less margin for error…….sure, until you can’t.
