Is Mega Cab worth the extra cost?

I have a 06 megacab. When I bought mine new, they made me a better deal than on a quad cab. If I had to pick again I would go with another mega cab and I would go with a slider hitch because of one of them been there done that situations.

I am 6'4 and 270-280 depending on when i last ate. When we looked at our new truck, the first thing I did was sit in the back seat. I fit fine in the back of a Ram 2500 Crew Cab and have sat in the back for 6 hours on a family trip. To me, the Mega Cab isn't worth it

I traded in a Suburban for a 2006 Mega Cab Diesel back when we still had our travel trailer but wanted to upgrade to a 5th wheel. It was a bit of an adjustment at first because we had gotten used to all the cargo space in the suburban. With 3 growing kids and 3 small dogs, the back seat area was pretty full in the Mega Cab. Storage behind the rear seat is sufficient for backpacks, pillows and smaller items. For us, it was worth it at the time. Now the kids are grown so the dogs have the back seat to themselves. Most of the time, they're whining to get up front with us. Our next truck will probably be a crew cab long bed which will be just as hard to maneuver around in tights spots as the Mega Cab is but I like the stability of that longer wheel base.

Where would your Casino night passengers sit? Or are you talking mega-cab versus crew cab?

I love my MegaCab and would not buy anything else any more. It is nice to have the added space for passengers or just stuff. The extra wheelbase is also a plus for larger loads.

There is something to be said for a larger, heavier truck when hauling. Its not just about horsepower and torque to get a comfortable and safe experience.

We have a 2015 Ram 3500, Crew Cab, Long Bed. The rear seat has MORE leg room than most American Cars. Two, 6', 240 lbs. adults FIT COMFORTABLY in the rear seat. The rear seat is so huge that I thought the salesman was trying to pull a fast one until he showed me a MEGA CAB.

We have a motorhome now, But for a number of years we towed a 5th wheel with a Megacab. Thought it was great. The short bed was never a problem for me. We have two kids, they are in college now, and still go on trips in the motorhome. When they were younger and up to high school the mega cab paid off. The extra space and the fact they could lean their seats back kept the sanity. We drug that 5th wheel from coast to coast and back again. I still have the truck, it's my main vehicle.

My wife has a Jeep we tow. That old dog was great. Has built in GPS, which has been way better any of the RV GPS models I've had. It never got lost, or got jumpy. I will get buried in that truck.

However, if you really never have people back there why bother. I couldn't imagine riding in the back seat in all the traveling we've done in truck that wasn't a Megacab. Mine was a "program" truck. Had a couple of thousand miles on it when I purchased it. Yes it was expensive, but well worth it. It has about 140,000 miles on it now and hasn't missed a beat. Keep the oil changed, check your fluids, etc. and it will go on and on and on.

When we started looking for a NTU truck, the Chevy extended cab won the toss. We needed enough room to haul 5 on occasion with a car seat in the middle, and still have room for a 4 wheeler in the bed while towing the camper. Yes its tight in the back, but still comfortable enough to tolerate a several hour trip. Son has a ram crew cab and we have as much leg room. BIL has a ford 350 4 door and its got more room, not much, but the long bed makes it all but impossible in a parking lot. This 5.3 pulls around 5000 lbs fine and got 12.5 MPG coming home on the last trip, 20 MPG running local to work.

I will chime in here since I just traded my crew cab for a mega cab. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is the mega cab rides much better due to the longer wheelbase. Lots of room in the rear seat which is a big bonus for me as I have two teenage daughters. I like the mega much better. It is longer, so getting into parking spaces is a little tougher, but nothing you won't adjust to quickly.

It will definitely be a crew cab of some sort. We really love the Durango and it tows better than you might guess I just don't have GVWR capacity for passengers. It is important to me that my passengers are comfortable, we travel to Casinos for poker tournaments. We went to the auto show and sat In the back seats of all the trucks. My wife thought most were comfortable but I was only comfortable in the Mega Cab because it reclined. I think that after a few hours, sitting straight up could be uncomfortable. The big problem is that most of the available Mega Cabs are Laramie or Limited with all the bells and whistles and are running $64K to $70K which is way over budget. I know I can order a truck to my specifications but it seems you lose the ability to negotiate price.

I sure wish there were still 3/4 ton SUV's. I know there are many skeptics but the Durango tows 7300lb/32ft and stops just fine. I did the Columbia Gorge in high wind and the Oregon Coast under a high wind warning and never crossed into another lane.

There is no way a chevy extended cab has as much leg room as a crew cab ram... I would agree with a quad cab, but crew is much bigger... I have had both.

A mega cab is not a longer truck than a crew cab with the 8 bed.

I realize it very confusing, but let's try to give the OP accurate feedback.

My crew cab *long bed* is the same in length as a mega cab. I don't recall wheelbase, but do feel like they're very close.

And, I'm betting they weight close to the same. Maybe slightly heavier for the MC.

BUT- I'm guessing that what you're saying accounts for the huge difference in payload capacity on the 12s I looked at. Ram did something suspension-wise which makes them ride smoother and more "car-like". It also impacted their posted carrying numbers. I just don't know what it is.

Keep looking we just looked at a 2016 3500 mega cab big horn sticker 62k they said we could get it for 53k. It had 8.4 inch radio with nav heated seats and steering wheel and many other amenties. I agree the laramies get a little to expensive.

We love it. There are gives and takes though. We upgraded from a F150 super cab long bed. There just wasn't enough room in the back for the kids. There is room and plenty more now. I love the extra space behind the seat for things like tools, bags, gun cases, etc. I don't think it is any more difficult to access that space over any other crew cab truck. I can see it being an issue if you have larger tires. The short box stings a bit. I liked being able to put full sheets of plywood in the bed with a closed gate with the old truck. Not so much anymore. The truck lives in the garage so length was a premium. As is the mega short bed is about two inches longer than the old F150. As far as towing, we don't use a slider and have not had an issue. I am sure that there are those that will ridicule me, but we were turn limited with the bumper pull and we are limited just the same with the FW. Good news now with the 3500 is that I can carry a full bed of rock, dirt, or whatever vs just a small portion of that.
