I have been using Fram oil filters but need some advice. My choice may be not a good one for my diesel

In my opinion from what I have read Fram is bottom of the barrel. For my cummins Fleetguard. When I had the 6.0 power stroke only motorcraft only.

I agree That Fram and other low cost oil filters are not good for a long live on any Diesel engines.

Most low cost filters do not have the same number and size openings in the stamp metal cover. Thus causing filter flow issues. Some omit the Steel Bevel Washer in bottom of the can that is used to hold the filter media in place. In place it may be a plastic piece or none at all. The Filter media may not be of the same dirt holding capacity that the engine manufacture recommends. Thus when it is at full capacity it may allow the debris to pass on back into the engine. Some omit the filter bypass valve that is required to protect the system. Thus allowing the filter media to fail. These are some of the known issues with low cost filters.

The only filters I would recommend and use are Fleetguard, Caterpillar, Donaldson, Paul and Baldwin filters. Motor Craft for Ford engines could be good filter for a Ford engine and the same brand of filter that GMC/Chevy recommend. Since I do not own a GMC product I can not recommend any filter that is manufactured for GMC.

I use WIX or buy from the dealer if I got lazy and didn't order one. I have also ordered filters from here "https://www.dieselfiltersonline.com/" good prices for top of the line filters.

Puralator and Wix are probably your best choices. I used to use Puralator but they have become harder to find in the numbers I need. So I have switched to Wix.

I used to be a solid Fram guy until I had two filter failures on two different vehicles in two weeks. The media was damaged (torn or folded over) during construction and had giant holes which provided zero filtration. I cut open my oil filters to get all the oil out and to inspect the media. If I hadn’t cut them open I would never had known and probably would still be using them. On my ram diesel i use fleetguard and my gassers either wix or Baldwin. Bobistheoilguy is a forum that has a infinite amount of info on oil, oil filters, air filters, etc. Several tests have been done on every brand and the results are eye opening.

A/C Delco filters, both fuel and oil, are OEM. Those oil filters are available on Amazon or EBay for under $20.00 each.
If you want 200k plus miles out of that motor why buy unknown.
Good luck with that delete. We all want to know results.
Now, if you really want to wake that engine up, add a chip and get a monitor so you can see what is going on.

Mopar for me. Oil filters are dirt cheap compared to fuel filters. Not worth saving a couple $ IMO.

For oil, WIX filters for my truck and tractors are the same filter as NAPA Gold. They also sell Motorcraft filters for my diesel truck at Walmart. I use either.

I use Donaldson for coolant filtration.

Fram is complete junk! i dont use them for anything! i had a fram
air filter and the end cone FELL OFF letting air go right past the filter!!

i use cummins filters from walmart, they only cost like $13. I also used
motorcraft on my f150 when i had it. so i like to stick to OEM when it comes
to oil filters.

I run Mobil 1 oil filter, pretty good specs. I buy them when on sale. FWIW I send oil samples about once a year, my samples always come back better than the average Duramax. Also just run conventional 15w-40.

Low end oil filters have an inferior filter medium that can collapse under pressure spilling all kind of junk back into the engine. Worse is that it can go unnoticed for a some time until it's too late and the damage is done.
If an engine fails during the warranty period and the shop finds out that a low quality filter was used that warranty is most likely history and the owner can be on the hook for thousands.

Lotta hate for FRAM. I'm 67...used FRAM filters all my driving life.
Wife has Mariner w/170k, I have F150 w/266k. Always used FRAM.

Wix has a good reputation, and makes oil filters that will cross reference for many applications. I used Wix racing filters on my BBC 632, and I use Wix on my E450 MH.

I used most all of what is listed by others in my shop, sometimes when I bought a new machine they would give a 12 pack of their filters, Cat, Case and so on. Then I started just buying a few brands that had a broad coverage of vehicles, usually Baldwin, Wix, Fleetgaurd. In the German engines I use Mann and Hengst, with Pentosin oil for the low ash required with DPF engines like MB. I use Royal Prurple for compression ignition engines in my personal trucks. I have 3 Dodge Cummins in pickups 856k , 472K, and 131K miles. None of the engines have ever had more than a water pump or a timing case cover seal. I have one MB 2009 closing in on 180K and last but not least my little run about PD engine in a beetle with 197K , still gets 45 mpg. I think sometimes I have too many vehicles. I have a fairly nice home to maintain them in so that helps.
