Just weighed my tv and tt and the results are concerning.

My van has a tow capacity of 6600 but 7300 with a WD according to manual. My van weighs 5740 dry with a quarter tank. I never carry anything in van , all usually goes on tt when camping. So let's add 5 people about 670 so we're at
6410 , add 21 gallons of gas to get the balance to a full tank is 27 lbs ( 6lbs per gal.)
6437 Total , let's call it
6500

The tt weighs 4880 near with empty fridge, add 100 lbs for clothes and a couple of things so about 4980 balance , let's call it 5000

Balance is , let's call it
11500

My gross tow vehicle capacity is 11000/12000 according to manual I'm assuming that this means anywhere in between . Basically it looks like I'm right at or very near to the max. My trans runs cool at 170 to 180 on the highway so I feel safe there , the temps on the motor according to the factory gauge is normal and stable, I get no swerving or stability issues with the wdh , the ride seems nice. So since all looks good and feels good and temps are good , should I worry? A buddy who a mechanic states that these specs are always under rated to provide a cushion. What do you all think?

You need to look at the weight carrying capacity of the Van. That is usually the limiting factor. It will be on the sticker on the drivers door jamb. From that you subtract the weight of cargo/passengers in van (670) plus about 100lbs for WDH. The remainder is what is left for hitch weight. The hitch weight approx 12-15% of loaded trailer weight should be less than what you have left.
