List of cars that can be towed

Approved list of tow vehicles?
We are looking for a used car to tow behind our class c Isata4. It seems the only thing we find that is approved for towing are jeeps. We get all kinds of conflicting info about what can and can’t be towed. Some folks have said they tow a certain make/model but when we check the owners manual for that brand it advises against towing for long distances. So does anyone know of a printed list of approved small(er) cars that can be flat towed?

Motorhome magazine used to do an annual dinghy towing guide, but no more. Here is the guide from 2019, which might help depending what year car you want to buy. The list begins on page 18. https://webcontent.goodsam.com/motor...inghyGuide.pdf

If you’re wanting to buy a pre 2019 car there are guides for each model year going back in time.

And, like the man behind the Bar said…..the farther back you go in model years, you may find more model selections. Today’s newest electronic 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 speed automatic transmissions most often don’t like being towed…..or becoming what we call your dinghy. There’s much more to select from if you like manual transmission vehicles, but you have to decide.

For example….one of the more popular toads was the Honda CRV up to 2014.
Chevy Equinox or GMC Terrain between 2010 and 2017 gave you the choice of 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder FWD or AWD.
Chevy Malibu and Pontiac G6 and Saturn vehicles up until 2009?
There was a period where you could tow Ford Escapes…..until 2012 which also offered 4 cylinder, 6 cylinder FWD or AWD.
Again, older model years

If it's got a clutch your golden. Plus you can have some fun driving it.

toads

Check ford vehicles as I have a 2018 focus that I use. Older vehicles are probably best.

Despite some problems that Ford has had with their DPS6 automatic dual clutch transmission, the Fiesta and Focus cars equipped with that transmission are fully capable of toad duty. We tow a Fiesta with the DCT. It can be towed indefinitely with no cooling or lubrication concerns.

We got a free DPS6 warranty clutch replacement from Ford at 96,000 miles. Now have done another 50,000 miles trouble free. We are very happy with the car.
